Fifty New Ukrainian Orthodox Saints Dr. Alexander Roman (email) In what is one of the largest local Acts of Glorifications of Saints by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church headed by His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr, the following 48 new Saints were raised to the honours of the Altar during the UOC Synod that began on May 8, 2008: The Venerable Schema-nun of Kyiv and Arzamas, St Olimpiada (Feast day: 19 August) The Venerable Archimandrite of Khust Eparchy, St Job (28 July) The 17 Venerable Martyrs of Mhar Monastery in the Eparchy of Poltava (6 August) Ihumen St Ambrose The 13 Venerable Saints of the Hlinsk Monastery-Poustinia of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos:(Feast: 22 September) Ihumen St Filaret The 16 Venerable Saints of the Holy Don Mountains (Feast: 24 September): Holy Hierarch St Ilarion The Synod also ratified the writing of new icons depicting all these newly-glorified Saints, the preparation of Church services in their honour and the veneration of their holy Relics. The Synod ended its deliberations concerning the new Saints with prayers of “thanksgiving to the All-Merciful God, wondrous in the Saints, for granting these new intercessors for our Holy Church and our nation. Two more Ukrainian Saints will be glorified for universal Orthodox veneration in June during the Synod of the Moscow Patriarchate: St Anthony (Smirnitsky) Archbishop of Voronezh St Anthony was a contemporary of St Seraphim of Sarov. The latter once wrote to St Anthony before he was appointed to Voronezh to congratulate him on his promotion in advance! St Anthony was renowned for his holiness and scholarship in Kyiv and wherever he went. He follows the great Saints Mitrophan and Tikhon Zadonsky (St Tikhon was Ukrainian and worked with the Don Kozaks) in the Cathedra of Voronezh (not to mention the New Hieromartyrs and the great Choir of the Saints of Voronezh). St John Maximovych of Shanghai and San Francisco A direct descendant of St John Maximovych, Metropolitan of Siberia, St John II is well-known to even many Catholic and Protestant Christians. It was in Paris that he caught the attention of French Catholics because he walked barefoot (and was called by them “St Jean nus pieds”). He established Orthodox Churches in France, the Netherlands and Spain and built the great Cathedral of Our Lady the Joy of all who Sorrow in San Francisco. His missionary work in Shanghai (where he served the Liturgy in Chinese that was translated by his ancestor) resulted in the building of two Orthodox Churches there, one dedicated to the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “the Surety of Sinners.” Venerated by one and all, the Russian Orthodox Church will formally and universally glorify this great man of God (who was previously glorified by ROCOR). May all these Holy Saints of God pray unto God for us! [ Home ] [ Articles ] [ Prayer ] [ Saints ] [ Theophilus ] [ Q & A ] [About Us] [
