Ікона Жировицька, Гродненська область, Білорусь (появилась 1470 р)

На 20-го травня за григоріанським календарем (це 7-го травня за юліанським календерм) православні – особливо ж білоруські – славлять Іконоу Божої Матері, яка появилася чудесно в лісі біля Жировиці в Гродненській області в Білорусі.

Деякі пастухи побачили ясне світло в між гілками груші. Коли наблизились то побачили, що світло випливало від Ікони Богородиці з Дитятком Ісусом, яка стояла на одній з гілок. Пастухи принесли Ікону православному боярину Олександру Солтану а той положив її в скриню. Коли він хотів показати її на наступний день своїм гостям то не міг її знайти. Дещо пізніше пастухи знову побачили Ікону на груші і знову ж принесли її боярину. Цим разом він зустрів її з великою пошаною і пообіцяв побудувати церкву на місці де її знайшли.

Побудували дерев’яну церковцю і навколо неї виросла громадка людей. На жаль церковця згоріла около 1520 р. і всї сумували уважаючи, що чудова Ікона теж пропала. Та дещо пізніше проходили діти біля згарища і побачили прекрасну Жінку, яка сиділа на камені біля нього і вона тримала Ікону в своїх руках. Вони розповіли про це родичам і ті разом зі Священиком побігли до горбка, де стояла була церква. І там знайшли вже втретє Ікону зовсім не пошкоджену, яка стояла на камені а перед нею горіла свічечка.

Ікона знаходилась якийсь час у домі Священика і поставили пліт навколо каменя. Потім же побудували церкву з каменя для Ікони і повстав Монастир навколо Храму. У р. 1609 Храм перебрали прихильники Берестейської Унії, якою в р. 1596 багато православних увійшли під юрисдикцію Папи Римського, затримуючи свої православні обряди та звичаї. Церква знаходилася в цій юрисдикції до р. 1839. У той час Ікона стала дорогою для католиків як візантійського так і латинського обрядів.

Ікону перевезли в Москву підчас першої світової війни а в роках 1920-их вона повернулася у свої рідні сторони. Сьогодні ж вона знаходиться в Успенській катедрі Жировицького монастиря і її дуже шанують. У Катедрі також знаходиться камень, на якому вона стояла а також і чудотворне джерело, яке появилося разом з Іконою. На Празник Ікони приходять вірні з далека, щоб пошанувати її і привезти з собою додому трохи води з цього джерела.

Нехай же ця Ікона, яку шанують три громади Христової Віри допомагає нам усім зростати в любові та служінню Господу, що дав нам такий прецінний дар. Амінь.

The Zhirovits Icon, Hrodna Oblast', Belarus (year of apparition 1470)

On May 20 Gregorian Calendar (corresponds to May 7 on the Julian Calendar) the Orthodox, especially those of Belarus, celebrate an Icon of the Mother of God which appeared miraculously in the forest near Zhirovits in the Hrodna (widely known by in its Polish version as Grodno) oblast’ of Belarus.

Some shepherds saw a brilliant light in the branches of a pear tree. Coming closer they saw that the light flowed from an Icon of the Mother of God with her Child, Jesus, which stood on one of the branches. The shepherds brought it to the Orthodox boyar Alexander Soltan who placed it in a chest. When he wanted to show it to some guests the next day the Icon could not be found. Some time later the shepherds again saw the Icon in the same pear tree and once more brought it to the boyar. This time he received it with great honour and vowed to build a Church in its honour on the spot where it had been found.

A wooden Church was built and a community sprang up around it. Alas a fire destroyed the Church around 1520 and everyone mourned thinking that the wonderful Icon had been lost to the flames. However when some children passed by the burned Church some time afterwards they saw a beautiful Lady sitting on a stone beside it and she was holding the Icon. They told their families about this and led by the priest the people went to the hill where the Church had stood. There upon a rock with a candle burning before it was the miraculous Icon, completely unharmed.

For a time the Icon remained in the priest’s home and a fence was built around the stone. Then a stone Church was built to house the Icon and a monastery sprang up around the Church. In 1609 the Church was taken over by adherents of the Unia of Berestya by which in 1596 many Orthodox came under the jurisdiction of the Pope of Rome while retaining their Orthodox rite and traditions. The Church remained under this jurisdiction until 1839. During that time the Icon came to be dear to Catholics of both the Byzantine and Latin rites.

The Icon traveled to Moscow during the first world war and in the 1920’s was returned to its home region. Today it is in the Dormition Cathedral of the Zhirovits Monastery and is deeply revered. The stone upon which it once stood is also located in the Cathedral as is the miraculous spring that appeared along with the Icon. On the Feastday of the Icon people come from far and wide to honour it and to take back with them some of the water from this Spring.

May this Icon which is dear to three communities of the Faith of Christ help us to grow in love and service to the Lord Who has given us the wonderful gift. Amen.
