Св. Сава Освячений

«Ти своїми сльозами вчинив плідною пустиню.»

На 18-го грудня (це 5-го грудня за юліанським календарем) ми святкуємо пам’ять великогомонаршого Святця, що намагався йти дорогою Христа на землях, де служив наш Господь. Знаходимо особливий зв’язок з Різдвом Христовим, до якого наближаємось у тому, що Монастир, якого він оснував, Лавра Св. Сави, працює до нині дещо менше чим 15 кілометрів від Вифлеєма, де народився наш Господь.

Сава народився в 439 р. в Муталасці, невідомому селі в Кападокії (сьогодні це частина Туреччини). Батько Іван був військовий старшина, якого викликали до Олександрії коли малому синові було тільки 5 років. Його дружина Софія виїхала разом з мужем отож малого Саву залишили під опікою його побожного дядька. Сава з малечку відчував нахил до життя подвижника. Вступив у Монастир Св. Флав’яна у віці 8 літ і відмовився повернутися до світського життя, коли повернулися до нього батьки. Прийняв монаший постриг у віці 17 літ.

Духовне життя о. Сави було дуже глибоким і Господь наділив його даром творення чуд. Цим не гордився юний монах, бо ж завжди пам’ятав він, що Джерело всіх чудес – то Господь, Який може користатися й найубогішими і найпростішими знаряддями, щоб виявляти свою любов і провидіння над світом, що повстав через Нього.

Після 10-ох років у монастирі подався о. Сава в Єрусалим і підкорив себе послухові визначного монашого духовного Отця, Преподобного Єфимія Великого (20-го січня/2-го лютого). Св. Євфимій послав його до Монастиря о. Феоктиста, де заховували строгий спільножитний монаший устав. Наступник цього ігумена поблагословив о. Саву змагатися в особистій оселі, а тільки приходити до Монастиря на поживу і молитву в суботу та неділю. А потім його поблагословив не приходити вже до Монастиря і змагатися на самоті в його печері.

Св. Євфимій був сильно вражений поступом його учня і став брати його з собою у пустиню на молитву й духовну пораду. Після упокоєння великого Старця Сава продовжував свої подвиги в самітності у печері біля Ваді Кідрон. До нього приєдналися інші монахи, що стали замагатися в довколішніх печерах у стрімких скелях. Він був їхній духовний Отець і організував їхнє життя навколо спільних Відправ та трудів, напр. плетення кошиків.

З часом ця громада стала Лаврою. Ствп вогненний показав Саві велику печеру, яку переробили на Храм. Чудодійний струмочок потік із землі для потіхи громади монахів. Коли ченці поскаржилися Патріархові, що немає в них Священика служити Божественну Літургію, то він висвятив для них самого о. Саву.

Святець оснував ще декілька монастирів. Також подорожував підтримувати православних у їхніх змаганнях проти єресей, які турбували Церкву в його часах відносно природ людської та божественної Господа нашого Ісуса Христа. Його Лавра зложила Типікон (порядок Відправ). Він назвався Єрусалимським Типіконом а з нього потім створився Константинопольський. Ці два Типікони вказують на порядок у Відправах для православних по всьому світі.

Смиренність і любов Св. Сави видні з розповіді про те, як він віднісся до монахів, які збунтувалися проти його влади і створили власну монашу громаду. Він почув, що вони попали в злидні та сильно голодають. Отож Сава особисто привіз їм провіанти і навіть побудував їм каплицю. З початку до нього відносилися з ненавистю та гнівом але його терпеливе й дбайливе відношення до них на останку пробили мури і браття примирилися з великим Отцем.

Св. Сава упокоївся в Бозі у р. 532 у віці 93 літ. Його мощі пробували в його Лаврі доки хрестоносці не вивезли їх до Риму в 12-му віці. Їх повернув Лаврі Папа Павло VI у р. 1965 під час його відвідин Святої Землі.

Православні українці Монреалю пригадують з радістю люблячого та ласкавого Священик, о. Саву Цетухіна, який упокоївся в Господі на Празник Св. Покрови 14-го жовтня 1970 р. Він гідно носив ім’я свого Небесного Покровителя.

Нехай Св. Сава, люблячий і відданий Воїн Христовий, допомагає нам у наших змаганнях віддати своє життя цілковито під опіку нашого Вселаскавого Господа, що знову наближається народитися між нами у Різдвяний час. Амінь.

St. Sabbas the Sanctified

“By your tears you made the desert fertile.”

On December 18 (December 5 Julian Calendar) we celebrate the memory of a great monastic Saint who struggled to follow the way of Christ in the land where our Lord ministered. A special link to the Lord’s Nativity to which we are drawing near may be found in the fact that the Monastery he founded, the Mar Saba Lavra, continues to function to this day just under 15 kilometers from Bethlehem where Jesus was born.

Sabbas was born in 439 in Mutalaska, an unknown village in Cappadocia (part of modern Turkey), to John and Sophia. John was a military leader who was called to Alexandria and was accompanied there by his wife. Little Sabbas was left at the age of five with his pious uncle. The little fellow was unusually drawn to the ascetic life. He entered the Monastery of St. Flavian at the age of eight and refused his parents’ entreaties to return to a life in the world. He was tonsured at the age of seventeen.

His spiritual life was so profound that the Lord bestowed upon him the gift of working miracles. This did not lead to spiritual pride in the young monk, who always remembered that the Source of all miracles is the Lord, and that He is able to use even the most lowly instruments to shower the world with His love and care.

After ten years at his monastery he went to Jerusalem and then placed himself in obedience to the renowned monastic Father, St. Euthymius the Great (January 20/February2). St. Euthymius sent him to the strict cenobitic monastery of Abba Theoctistus. This Abba’s successor blessed Sabbas to struggle in a hermitage and come to the Monastery for nourishment and prayer on Saturdays and Sundays. Eventually he was permitted to live at his hermitage for five years without returning to the Monastery.

St. Euthymius was much impressed with the prowess of his disciple and began to take him along into the wilderness for prayer and counsel. After the Elder’s repose Sabbas continued his solitary struggles in a cave in the Wadi Kidron. He was joined by other monks who took up their struggles in nearby caves in the cliffs. He was their Abba and structured their lives around common prayer and such labours as basket-weaving.

In time this community became a Lavra. A pillar of fire showed Sabbas a large cave which was made into a Church. A miraculous spring flowed out of the earth to bless the community. When the monks complained to the Patriarch that they had no priest among them to celebrate the Divine Liturgy, he ordained St. Sabbas to so serve them.

The Saint went on to found several other monasteries. He also traveled to support the Orthodox in their struggles against the heresies that troubled the Church in his time regarding the natures of Christ. His Lavra composed a Typikon (order of divine services). Called the Jerusalem Typikon, this was later followed by a Constantinople Typikon and these two help direct the order of services for the Orthodox throughout the world.

The humility and love characterizing St. Sabbas is evident from this story of how he dealt with monks who rebelled against his authority and set up their own monastic community. He heard that they were undergoing hard times and were literally starving. Sabbas personally brought them provisions and even erected a chapel for them. At first he was received with hate and hostility, but his patient loving care eventually broke down these barriers and his brothers were reconciled with the great Abba.

St. Sabbas reposed in the Lord in 532 at the age of 93 years. His relics remained at his Lavra until they were taken by the Crusaders to Rome in the twelfth century. They were returned to the Lavra by Pope Paul VI in 1965 during his visit to the Holy Land.

The Ukrainian Orthodox of Montreal remember fondly a loving and gentle priest, Fr. Sava Cetuchin, who fell asleep in the Lord on the Feast of the Protection of the Mother of God, October 14, 1970. He worthily bore the name of his Heavenly Patron.

May St. Sabbas, the loving and dedicated warrior of Christ, help us in our struggle to surrender our lives completely to our Blessed Lord Who comes again to be born among us in this Christmastide. Amen.
