«O, Око, що бачить і Ухо, що чує – почуй мене!»

Св. Праведний Йосип Обручник

У неділю після Різдва Господа Бога і Спаса нашого Ісуса Христа ми поминаємо Св. Праведного Йосипа Обручника, якого в українських колядках з любов’ю згадуємо п. н.  «Праведний Йосиф» або «Йосиф старенький».

Та скільки б не казали, ніколи не могли б достатньо похвалити цю чудову людину! У його віці більшість людей його часу були б задоволені просто відпочивати й дати нащадкам можливість доглядати за них. Ранні християнські джерела, які включають апокрифічні писання, як також і писання ранніх Отців Християнських, кажуть, що він був вдівцем із 4-ма синами, як також ідочками, коли він погодився бути обрученим молодій сирітці діві Марії, яка чудом народилася  батькам Йоакиму й Анні тоді коли обої вже були в такому віці, що вже звичайно їм діти б на родилися.

Йосип зробив це з поважним ваганням через свій вік, але був слухняним на завдання, яке так зрозумів, що воно йому доручено Самим Богом. Його віра скоро була випробувана, коли стало ясним, що Марія – вагітна. Доброта цього надзвичайного чоловіка відразу стала видною, бо ж він вирішив не користатися зі свого права бути вільним від обов’язку продовжувати доглядати за своєю нареченою (а її потім могли були вкаменувати), а тихо послати її в таке місце, де вона могла б породити свою дитину в безпечності.

Коли він так вирішив то появився йому Ангол у сні (як сказав був Пророк Йоїль – 2:28) і сказав йому, що Дитятко в утробі Марії – від Духа Святого. І як відповіла Марія на провіщення Божого плану Архангелом так і Йосип погодився і від того часу був вірним опікуном і Матері й Дитятку, захищаючи їх і постаючи їм все потрібне для життя аж доки не впокоївся багато років пізніше.

Св. Ігнатій Богоносець (його поминаємо дуже близько до Різдва Христового) написав у своєму Посланні до Ефесян: «Так дівство Марії було приховане від князя цього світу, як також і її Плід і смерть Господа. Отож три таїнства славні, які чинилися в тиші, але об’явлені нам».  Іншими словами опікунство Йосипа захистили Доручених йому від ворожої уваги зі сторони ворогів духовних і людських аж до того часу коли настав час стати перед ними віч-на-віч і перемогти їх тією ж зброєю, яку вони бажали були вжити проти їх, а особливо проти Дитятка. Бо ж коли сповнився час то наш Господь Ісус переміг смертю смерть.

Є чудова розповідь в апокрифічній «Історії Йосипа» з 4-го віку про упокоєння Праведного. Він знав про час свого відходу з цього світу і приготовився до нього останньою візитою до Храму в Єрусалимі а потім повернувся до Вифлеєму і приліг до ліжка, з якого мав залишити земну марноту. Тоді підішов до нього Ісус і сказав: «Радуйся, батьку мій Йосипе, праведнику!» А Йосип відповів: «Радуйся, мій улюблений Сину. Дійсно болі і страх перед смертю мене огорнули. Але коли тільки я почув Твій голос, моя душа відпочила. О Ісусе з Назарету!  Ісусе, Мій Спасителю! Ісусе, о найсолодше ім’я в моїх устах і в устах кожного, що любить його! O, Око, що бачить і Ухо, що чує – почуй мене! Я слуга Твій; у цей день я смиренно поклоняюсь Тобі і перед Твоїм лицем виливаю мої сльози. Ти справді Бог мій!» (www.serfes.org/lives/stjoseph. htm).

Дорогий Отче Йосипе! Моли Бога за нас, щоб і ми могли ясно проявляти образ Того, що нас створив для Себе, у всьому що думаємо, що чинимо і що говоримо у цей святковий час і по всі дні нашого життя. І так дай щоб ми вічно раділи з Анголами та Святими довкола Столу Сина й Матері Його, Яких Ти так вірно захищав і пильнував усе дні Твого життя. Амінь.

“O Eye that seest and Ear that hearest, hear me!”

The Righteous Elder Joseph the Betrothed

On the Sunday after the Feast of the Nativity of our Lord, God and Saviour Jesus Christ, we commemorate the Righteous Elder Joseph the Betrothed, to whom Ukrainian carols lovingly refer by the title “the Righteous Joseph” (“Pravednyi Yosyf”) or “the elderly Joseph” )”Yosyk Satren’kyi”).

We could never say enough wonderful things about this truly wonderful human being.  At his age most people of his day would have been content to relax and let their offspring look after him. Early sources, which include apocryphal writings as well as those of early Christian fathers, say he was a widower with four sons as well as daughters when he undertook to be betrothed to the young orphan maid Mary, who was miraculously born to her parents Joachim and Anna when they both were well-past the age when children were usually born.

Joseph did so with a great deal of misgiving because of his age but in obedience to what he perceived to be the task given to him by God. His faith was soon tested when it became apparent that Mary was with child. The goodness of this wonderful man was immediately apparent as he decided – instead of exercising his right to be free of the obligation looking after his betrothed (who could then have been stoned) – to quietly send her somewhere where she could be looked after and have her child in peace.

No sooner had he so decided than an angel appeared in his dream (as the prophet Joel had said – 2:28) to tell him that the child in Mary’s womb was conceived of the Spirit of God. As Mary had done in response to the Archangel’s announcement of God’s plan, Joseph also agreed and from that time on was a faithful guardian to both mother and Child, providing for them and protecting them until his repose many years later.

St. Ignatius the God-bearer (commemorated near the Feast of the Nativity) wrote in his Epistle to the Ephesians: “Now the virginity of Mary was hidden from the prince of this world, as was also her Offspring, and the death of the Lord. Thus, three mysteries of renown, which were wrought in silence, but have been revealed to us".  In other words Joseph’s guardianship protected his Charges from hostile attention on the part of spiritual and human enemies until the time came to confront them – and ultimately overcome them with the very weapon which they would have wanted to use against them, especially against the Child.  For our Lord Jesus overthrew death by His death in the fullness of time.

There is a lovely account in the apocryphal 4th century “History of Joseph” of the Righteous’ one’s repose. He knew when he was about to leave this world and prepared for it by going to the Temple in Jerusalem one last time, then returned to Bethlehem and took to his bed from which he was to take his leave of earthly vanity.  Then Jesus came up to him and said: “Hail, my father Joseph, thou righteous man."  And Joseph responded: “Hail, my well-beloved Son. Indeed the agony and fear of death has encompassed me. But as soon as I heard Thy voice, my soul was at rest. O Jesus of Nazareth! Jesus, my Saviour! Jesus, O sweetest name in my mouth, and in the mouth of all that love it! O Eye that seest and Ear that hearest, hear me! I am Thy servant; this day I most humbly reverence Thee and before Thy face I pour out my tears. Thou art altogether my God." (www.serfes.org/lives/stjoseph.htm).
