Св. Ап. Силидоній, що народився сліпим

У Шосту Неділю після Паски ми пригадуємо чудесну подію уздоровлення Сліпонародженого (Івана 9:1-38). Св. Церква знову нагадує нам значіння Христового Воскресення для людського роду. У Четверту Неділю ми пригадали, що Його Воскресення принесло нам можливість рухатися та діяти На Його славу. А в П’яту Неділю ми собі пригадали, що Воскреслий Христос окрилює нас даром Святого Духа. Сьогодні ж ми пригадуємо, що Його Воскресення дало нам можливість бачити.

Зір, який ми одержали проникає темряву розгублення та забуття, що приносить нам життя у світі, що упав у гріх. Цей зір бачить широку панораму вічного Царства, нашого справжнього Дому, якого дав нам Господь. У світлі цього Царства, яке відновлюється знову і знову через нашу участь у Божественній Літургії, ми проходимо свою щоденне життя з радістю, надією, спокоєм, вірою та любов’ю намагаючись чинити Господні діла, смиренно визнаючи свої недостачі та падіння і наполегливо стараючись здійснювати повноту нашого славного покликання бути Його друзями, Його дітьми та Його послами в світі.

Церква каже нам, що так як Лазар та самарянка, Світлана, і цей блаженний чоловік, що одержав таку ласку від Господа став Святим, якого поминаємо в Церковному календарі. Святий Отець наш Димитрій Туптало, Митрополит Ростовський, який присвятив своє життя укладанню Четі Мінеї, в якій читаємо повний опис Життія Святих, подає ім’я сліпонародженого, як Силидоній. Він пише, що коли розгорілося переслідування Християн в Єрусалимі то Св. Лазар, якого воскресив Господь із мертвих, утік разом з учнем Господнім Св. Максимином та з Св. Силидонієм, якому дав Господь зір. Лазар остався на Кипрі де служив решта своїх днів, як Єпископ, а Максими і Силидоній подалися далі в Галію (Францію), де потрудилися й вони для Христової Євангелії до кінця своїх днів на землі. Св. Димитрій подає такий опис пишучи про Собор Святих 70-ох Апостолів, що припадає на 4-го січня (відповідає 17-му січня на григоріанському календарі).

Св. Василій Великий та інші Отці звертають увагу на те, що то за виняткова подія відбулася цим чудом Господнім. Кажуть вони, що це не просто справа з чоловіком, якого очі не працювали. Кажуть що Силидоній таки народився без очей. Тобто Ісус приклав грязиво на порожні місця, де мали б бути очі – і ось появилися очі, які досконало бачили! Господь наш виявив цим, що Він – Той що створив людину з пороху землі. А разом з цим зором прийшов і зір духовний бо ж читаємо як щиро й відважно свідчив Силидоній про своє уздоровлення тим, які ставили йому ворожі запити про це чудо тому, що почували себе загроженими появою цього Месії Божого.

А на останку поставив він їм питання: «Може й ви Його учнями хочете стати?» Це викликало сердиту й горду відповідь від допитувачів і його вилучили з громади. Але Господь установив його назавжди в вічну громаду вірних, об’являючи йому, що Він справді Месія, Божий Посланець Який спасає світ.

Питання Силидонія лунає і нам, закликаючи нас бачити ясно і трудитися, як учні Христа у темряві цього світу, бо ж почав світати вічний День з Воскресенням Христа і це Світло має скоро наповнити всю землю нашу. Амінь.

St. Celidonius the Blind Man

The Sixth Sunday after Pascha is dedicated to the remarkable account of our Lord’s healing of the Blind Man (John 9:1-38). Again the Church reminds us about the meaning of Christ’s Resurrection for humanity. In the Fourth Sunday we realized that the Resurrection brought us wholeness. In the Fifth Sunday we recall that the Risen Christ energizes us with the Holy Spirit. Today we recall that it is by His Resurrection that we are able to see.

The sight which has been given us is the sort which penetrates the darkness of confusion and forgetfulness brought on by living in a fallen world. It opens before us the panorama of the eternal Kingdom, our true home given us by our Lord. In the light of this Kingdom, which is renewed again and again by our experience of the Divine Liturgy, we go through our daily lives with joy, hope, peace, faith and love seeking to do the Lord’s work, humbly acknowledging our failures and pressing on to realize the fullness of our glorious vocation as His friends, His children and His amabassadors.

As was the cСase with Lazarus and the Samaritan woman, Photina, the Church tells us that this recipient of the Lord’s miraculous care went on to become a Saint who is commemorated in the Calendar. St. Demetrius Tuptalo, the Metropolitan of Rostov, whose life labour was to compile the Lives of the Saints for the Menaion, gives the name of the man who had been born blind as Celidonius. He recounts that when persecution of the Christians broke out in Jerusalem, St. Lazarus who had been raised from the dead, fled on a sailboat together with the Lord’s disciple St. Maximin and St. Celidonius who had been given sight by our Lord. Lazarus stayed in Cyprus, fulfilling his earthly days as a Bishop, while Maximin and Celidonius went on to Gaul (France) where they laboured for the Gospel to the end of their earthly sojourn. St. Demetrius gives this account in writing on the Feast of the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles on January 4 (January 17 on the Gregorian Calendar).

St. Basil the Great and other fathers draw attention to the uniqueness of this miracle of our Lord’s. They say that it was not just a case of a man whose eyes were not working. They say that Celidonius was actually born without eyes. In other words Jesus placed the clay upon empty sockets, the place where the eyes ought to have been, and lo, eyes appeared – eyes which saw perfectly! Our Lord showed Himself to be the Creator who had made man out of the dust of the earth. Along with these eyes also came spiritual sight as Celidonius gave courageous testimony to his healing in response to the hostile questions about the miracle by those who felt threatened by the emerging Messiah.

Finally he posed the question to them: “Do you also want to become His disciples?” This brought an angry and haughty response from the interrogators and he was cast out of the community. But our Lord instated him in the eternal community of the faithful revealing to him that He was indeed the Messiah sent by God the Father to save the world.

Celidonius’ question resounds in our ears as well, challenging us to see clearly and labour as Jesus Disciples in the night of this world, for the eternal Day has dawned with the Resurrection of Christ and its Light will soon fill the whole world. Amen.
