Преподобномучениця Анастасія Римлянка (3-тє століття)

Дуже популярним у нашому народі ім’я «Анастасія» чи в скороченні «Настя». Походить воно від преславного і пресвітлого Воскресення Господнього – по грецькому «Анастасіс». Є дві Святі Мучениці, які це ім’я прославила своїм свідченням про Христа аж до крові. Одна постраждала в 3-му а друга в 4-му століттях.

29-го жовтня (відповідає 11-му листопаду за Новим стилем) поминаємо першу з них - Преподобномученицю Анастасію Римлянку. Прозивають її «римлянкою», щоб відрізнити її від другої Анастасії, що прославила Господа мучеництвом у 4-му столітті у м. Сірміюм (сьогодні це Сремська Мітровіца у Сербії).

Ця перша Анастасія осталась сиротою ще в дитинстві. Ігуменя маленького жіночого монастиря в Римі, Софія, взяла її на виховання до себе в монастирі. Дівчинка Настя навчилася щиро любити й уповати на Господа.

Як кажуть: «У Бога онуків немає». Тобто кожна людина сама особисто мусить полюбити й прийняти служіння Господові. Батьки й духовні наставники й виховними можуть за неї молитися, та її вчити, а особливо прикладом свого життя та покаяння, але остаточне рішення таки остається за нею. Відданість Насті Господеві мусіло перейти дуже важке випробовування – в якому, за Його допомогою, вона була переможною!

А сталось вона ось як. Розпочав гоніння на християн імператор Декій (249-251). Міський адміністратор Пров, під наказом імператора, звелів привести молоденьку Настю до нього. Ясно було зразу, яким буде вислід цієї зустрічі. Ігуменя зі слізьми поблагословила юну мученицю Настю на страждання Христа ради. Вояки привели її до Прова. Він був зворушений її юністю та красою і старався переконати її такими словами: «Чому ж би тобі марнувати свої юні літа без жодної втіхи? Чого здобудеш ти муками і смертю за Розп’ятого? Поклонись нашим богам, прийми собі вродливого мужа і живи в славі та почестях».

Та Свята Настя відповіла відважно й подиву гідно: «Мій муж, мої скарби, моє життя і моя потіха це Господь мій Ісус Христос і вам не відвернути мене від Нього вашими облудними порадами». А тоді стали люто мучити її. Настя переносила все відважно прославляючи Господа за все – і за силу переносити терпіння.

Мучителі припинили ці оклики хвали Богові, відрізавши її язика. Мешканці міста врешті обурились таким знущанням над молодою дівчиною і Пров, завваживши, як міняється наставлення натовпу, вирішив відразу припинити муки відсіченням голови юної Насті. І так Св. Анастасія здобула вінець мучеництва.

Пров тоді звелів викинути тіло за мури міста на пожирання дикими звірами, але до цього не допустив Господь. Навчена Ангелом, Ігуменя Софія пішла та знайшла святе тіло Анастасії і з допомогою двох християн побожно з молитвами похоронили його. Сьогодні ж більша частина цих мощей знаходяться в Монастирі Св. Григорія на Св. Горі Афон.

Свята Преподобномученице Анастасіє, моли Бога за нас, щоб відвертав нас, молодих і старих, від облудного зваблювання цього світу, і щоб ми щиро полюбили Того, що Себе віддав за нас і що кличе йти за Ним у чистоті та істині, не замінюючи вічне дочасним.

St. Anastasia the Roman (3rd century)

The name “Anastasia” is very popular especially among Slavic people. Ukrainians love the diminutive “Nastya” which is taken from it. The origin of the name is with the Glorious and Luminous Resurrection of our Lord - in Greek “Anastasis”. There are two Martyrs who have glorified the name by their testimony to Christ written with their life-blood. One suffered in the third and the other in the fourth century.

On October 29 (corresponds to November 11 New style) we celebrate the memory of the first of the them, the Venerable (the title of a monastic Saint) Martyr Anastasia the Roman. She is called that to distinguish her from the other Anastasia who glorified the Lord by martyrdom in the fourth century in the city of Sirmium (today it is Sremska Mitrovica in Serbia).

This first Anastasia was orphaned at a very early age. The abbess of a small convent in Rome, Sophia, took her in to raise her in this holy abode. Little Nastya came to truly love and rely upon the Lord.

It is said that “God has no grandchildren”. That is, every individual person must come to love and accept the service of the Lord for themselves. Parents and spiritual guides and teachers may pray for them and seek to teach them – especially by the example of their own live and penitence – but the final decision always rests with the individual. Young Nastya’s devotion to Jesus was to undergo a most arduous test, but in which with His help, she was victorious

This is how it was. The emperor Decius (249-251) initiated a persecution of Christian. The city administrator, Probus, under his orders commanded that young Nastya be brought to him. It was evident what the outcome of this meeting would be. The abbess tearfully blessed her young charge to suffer for Christ. The soldiers brought her to Probus, who was moved by her youth and beauty and sought to persuade her thus: “Why waste your youth, deprived of pleasure? What is there to gain by enduring tortures and death for the Crucified? Worship our gods, marry a handsome husband, and live in glory and honour”.
But St. Nastya answered him boldly: "My spouse, my riches, my life and my happiness are my Lord Jesus Christ, and you will not turn me away from Him by your deceit!” So the vicious tortures commenced. The young Saint accepted them bravely, praising the Lord for everything. Including the strength to endure suffering.

Her tormentors stopped these praises by cutting out her tongue. The city folk finally became angry at such treatment of a young girl and Probus, sensing the change in the mood of the crowd, decided to stop the tortures immediately by beheading the girl. And thus St. Anastasia the Roman won the crown of martyrdom.

Then Probus ordered that her body be thrown outside the walls of the city to be eaten by wild animals. The Lord would not let that be. The abbess Sophia, guided by an angel, came and found the holy body of Anastasia and with the help of two other Christians, prayerfully did her funeral. Today the major part of Anastasia’s holy relics repose in the Monastery of St. Gregory on Mount Athos.

Holy Venerable Martyr Anastasia, pray to God for us, to turn us, young and old, away from the seductive illusions of this world, that we might truly love the One, Who gave Himself for us and calls us to follow Him in purity and truth, not exchanging the eternal for that which passes away so very quickly.
