Ікона Божої Матері «Милостива» (Кікотіса)

«Нехай буде з нею Благодать Того, Кого я носила.»

На 25-го листопада (12-го за юліанським календарем) ми святкуємо Ікону, якої оригінал не бачили вже століттями, та яка добре відома через її численні списки (копії) – а побожно виконаний список носить ласку оригіналу. Це Ікона Божої Матері, яку називаємо «Милостива» або «Кікотіса» за горою Кікос на північно-західній частині острова Кіпру, в якій знаходиться Монастир з тим самим іменем а в ньому Храм збудований спеціально для неї, в якому вона перебуває від часів володінням візантійського імператора Олексія Комнена (1081-1118).

Передання каже, що це одна з трьох Ікон написаних Євангелистом Лукою на дереві, яке приніс від Дерева Життя Архангел Гавриїл до Богородиці Марії. Вона дала його Луці і побачивши Ікону ним написану на тому дереві промовила слова: «Нехай буде з нею Благодать Того, Кого я носила.» Лука переслав її християнам в Єгипті а звідти вона була перенесена до Константинополя доки старець Ісая, за небесною вказівкою, переніс її до Кіпру, де потрудився збудувати Храм. Її прихід супроводили надзвичайні чудеса, які продовжуються до нині.

На острові Кіпрі живуть і християни і мусульмани а наша Владичиця не розбирає між ними а подає свої милості усім, що моляться перед Іконою, яка закрита немов Скинія Старого Завіту. Між чудами, яких завдячують її є порятунок корабля, який потопав коли пробила його велика риба своїм гострим носом. Моряки кликнули: «Пресвята Діво Кікоса порятуй нас!» І корабель був врятований а в пам’ять про цю подію копія частини язика риби виконана в сріблі висить з покриття Ікони.

Ми знаємо, як виглядає Ікона з багатьох її списків. Особливість цієї Ікони це динамічна постать Дитятка-Христа. Він неначе звивається на руці Матері, а одна рука схована в її покритті і друга держить сувій. Вона ж держить Його в одній руці а другою вказує на Нього. Отож це Ікона «Провідниця», бо ж Марія показує нам вдаватися до Того, Якого вона привела в світ, щоб відкрив для нас двері до Раю. Постава Христа-Дитятка дає нам відчути неначе Він ось-ось вийде з Ікони до глядача. Він – живий і діяльний у цьому світі, якого Він створив і відкупив. А Марія передає Його Богу Отцю і нам.

Ті що особливо шанують Ікону на острові Кіпрі особливо шанують те, що це саме те дерево, яке держала в руках і принесла до Луки сама Марія. Вона подивляла закінчену Ікону і поблагословила її словами вище наведеними. Отож ця Ікона дає чудовий зв’язок з земним перебуванням Марії, яка не оставила нам жодних мощів крім тих речей, яких вона тримала й носила, бо ж Її Всемилостивий Син воскресив її з гробу і підніс до Раю.

Нехай Свята Мати і Дитятко Кікотіси благословляють нас сьогодні і на завжди, щоб ми радісно передавали всім ту Божественну Милість, яку вона приносить у світ. Амінь.

Icon of the Mother of God “the Merciful” (Kikkotissa)

“May the grace of Him Whom I bore be with it.”

On November 25 (November 12 – Julian Calendar) we celebrate an Icon whose original has not been seen for centuries, but which is well-known because of the numerous copies which have been made – and a piously made copy shares in the grace of the original. It is the Icon of the Mother of God called “The Merciful” or “Kikkotissa” after Mount Kykkos in the north-western part of Cyprus on which is found the Monastery of the same name and the Church which was built especially for it and in which it has stayed since the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comnenus (1081-1118).

Tradition says that this is one of the three Icons written by the Evangelist St. Luke on a piece of wood brought from the Tree of Life by the Archangel Gabriel to Mary the Theotokos. She gave it to Luke and when she saw the Icon he wrote upon it exclaimed: “May the grace of Him Whom I bore be with it”. Luke sent it to the Christians in Egypt and from there it was brought to Constantinople until Elder Isaiah, acting upon heavenly guidance brought it to Cyprus where he had the Church built. Its arrival was accompanied by wonderful miracles which continue to this day.

The island of Cyprus is inhabited by Christians and Muslims and our Lady does not differentiate between them, bestowing her graces upon all who pray before the Icon which is veiled like the Ark of the Covenant. Among the miracles attributed to her was the saving of a ship which was sinking upon having its side pierced by a swordfish. The sailors cried out: “Blessed Virgin of Kykko, save us!” and the ship was miraculously saved. In commemoration of this event a silver representation of the fish’s tongue hangs from the Icon.

We know of the appearance of the Icon from its many copies. A distinctive feature is the figure of the Christ Child which is dynamic. He seems to be twisting away from her, while one hand is buried in the folds of her head-covering and the other holds a scroll. She holds Him in one hand and points to Him with the other. Thus it is a “Directress” Icon for Mary directs our attention to the One she has brought into the world to open the door to Paradise for us. The Christ Child’s posture makes one feel that He is about to come right out of the Icon to the beholder. He is alive and active in this world which He has made and redeemed. And Mary offers Him to God the Father and to us.

Those who particularly honour the Icon on the island of Cyprus have a special reverence for the fact that this very wood was held by and brought to Luke by Mary herself. She admired the finished Icon and blessed it with the words noted above. Thus the Icon is a wonderful link to the earthly presence of Mary who has left us no relics except for the things that she touched and wore, since she was raised from her tomb and brought to Paradise by her Precious Son.

May the Holy Mother and Child of the Kykkos Icon bless us today and always that we may joyfully spread the divine Mercy it conveys to all around us. Amen.
