Ікона «Достойно є»

«Достойно є поправді величати Тебе Богородицею…»

Прекрасна й чудова літургійна традиція Православної Церкви не раз оздоблена особливими перлинами молитви переданих чудесним способом. Ось так і з улюбленою Молитвою, яку повторюємо багато разів у крузі літургійних Відправ а особливо яку співаємо торжественно під час Божественної Літургії: «Достойно є поправді величати Тебе Богородицею, завжди блаженною і найнепорочнішою і Матір’ю Бога нашого. Чеснішую Херувимів і незрівняно славнішую Серафимів, що породила Бога Слово непорочною. Правдиву Богородицю Тебе величаємо».

Другу частину цієї Молитви, яка починається словами «Чеснішую Херувимів…» написав православний Святець Косьма Солодкоспівець, який упокоївся в р. 773. Її співаємо при кінці майже кожної церковної Відправи.

А перша частина Молитви прийшла нам чудесно. Приблизно в р. 980, коли Василій ІІ Порфірородний був царем Візантії а Миколай Хрісоверг був патріархом Константинопольськими, монах якого ім’я нам не відоме жив зі своїм послушником, якого ім’я також невідоме, біля Карєса, адміністративного центру Св. Гори Афона. Вони були приписані до Монастиря Пантократора («Вседержителя»). Старець пішов до Монастиря прийняти участь у Всенічній і попросив послушника залишитися в келії і там прочитати Відправи.

Коли потемніло хтось застукав у двері. Послушник відкрив їх і побачив невідомого монаха, який дав своє ім’я як Гавриїл. З характерною гостинністю послушником запросив невідомого гостя зайти і стали вони обидва читати Відправи. Коли дійшли до Дев’ятої Пісні Канона як звичайно почали співати «Чеснішую Херувимів…» з супроводжуючими стихами від Євангелії Св. Луки. Проспівавши «Що Він зглянувся над покорою Своєї слуги…» невідомий монах додав слова, яґких послушник ніколи до того не чув: «Достойно є поправді величати Тебе Богородицею, завжди блаженною і найнепорочнішою і Матір’ю Бога нашого».

Проста краса цих слів зробила глибоке вражіння на послушника і він попросив невідомого монаха написати їх для нього. Той попросив паперу та послушник сказав, що такого немає в келії. Отож Гавриїл взяв черепиці з даху і написав не ній слова ці своїм пальцем. Послушник зрозумів тоді, що його гість не проста людина а Ангел, тобто Архангел Гавриїл – той самий, що благовістив Марії, що вона породить Спасителя світу. Сказавши: «Так співай ти і всі православні» небесний гість зник перед його очима.

Ікона, яка називалася «Милуючи», перед якою співали цю Молитву довго сяяла після того божественним сяйвом а День 11-го червня (відповідає 24-му червня по календарі григоріанському) призначений для вшанування її. Ікону стали називати «Достойно є» за першими словами Молитви переданої Гаврилом і принесли її до кафедрального Собору монастиря і там вона й знаходиться до нині. А черепицю з Молитвою перенесли до Константинополя.

Нехай співаємо ми ці слова з тією є радістю та побожністю, яку приніс Гавриїл до вбогої келії оцих монахів, яких імена знає Бог. І за їхніми молитвами нехай і ми знайдемо натхнення і силу смиренно і радісно відображувати нашого Господа в своїх словах та ділах, як завжди це робила Мати Ісуса, Марія, яку передав Він бути любою Матір’ю нас усіх. Амінь.

The Icon “Axion estin” (“Dostoyno ye”)

“It is truly meet to bless you, O Theotokos …”

The beautiful and awesome Liturgical tradition of the Orthodox Church is often embellished by special jewels of prayer given her through miraculous events. So it is with a beloved prayer said many times each day in the liturgical cycle, and especially sung with great jubilation during the Divine Liturgy. The prayer is “It is truly meet to bless you, O Theotokos ever blessed, and most pure, and the Mother of our God. More honourable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim. Without corruption you gave birth to God the Word. True Theotokos, we magnify you”.

The second part of this prayer, which begins with the words “More honourable…” was composed by the Orthodox Saint Cosmas the Melodist or Hymnographer, who reposed in 773. It is sung at the close of virtually every service of the Church.

The first part of the prayer was given miraculously. In about the year 980 when Basil II (Porphyrogenitos) was the Byzantine Emperor and Nicholas Chrysoberges was Patriarch of Constantinople a monk whose name is not known lived with his disciple, whose name is also not known, near Karyes, the administrative centre of the Holy Mountain, Mount Athos. Their hermitage was attached to the Monastery of the Pantokrator. The elder left to take part in the Vigil Service at the monastery, asking his disciple to stay behind and read the service in their cell.

As it grew dark the disciple heard a knock on the door. Outside there stood an unknown monk who gave his name as Gabriel. With characteristic hospitality the stranger was invited in and the two began to read the service. At the Ninth Ode of the Canon they sang the hymn “More Honourable than the Cherubim…” with the accompanying verses from the Gospel of St. Luke. After singing “For He has regarded the lowly estate of His handmaiden..” the stranger added words that the disciple had never heard before: “It is truly meet to bless you, O Theotokos ever blessed and most pure, and the Mother of our God”.

The disciple was struck by the simple beauty of the words and asked the stranger to write them down for him. The stranger asked for pen and paper but the disciple responded that there were none in the cell. Gabriel then took a tile from the roof and wrote the words on its surface with his finger. The disciple realized that his visitor was no ordinary man but an angel, in fact the Archangel Gabriel who had first announced to Mary that she would bear the Saviour of the world in her womb. Saying “Sing these words, and all the Orthodox as well” the heavenly visitor disappeared.

The Icon known as the “Eleousa” (“Merciful”) before which the hymn was sung glowed with divine light for some time and the day of June 11 (corresponds to June 24 on the Gregorian calendar) was designated as the day to honour it. The Icon came to be known in Greek as “Axion estin” and in Ukrainian as “Dostoyno ye”, the first words of the prayer given by Gabriel, and was brought to the Cathedral Church of the Monastery where it remains to this day. The roof tile with the prayer written upon it was brought to Constantinople.

May we sing and pray these words with the same joy and reverence brought by Gabriel to the humble cell of the monks whose names are known by God. And through their prayers may we be inspired and strengthened to humbly and joyfully reflect our Lord in our words and deeds as did the Mother of Jesus, Mary – whom He gave to us all to be our own dear Mother as well.
