Лист з Афганістану від о. Диякона Антонія Перкинса

Провідав я м. Міннеаполіс під кінець світлого тижня 2007 р., щоб звершати разом з Парохом Української Православної Громади Св. Катерини, о. Петром Сівком, Шлюб Марка Малярика та Іванни Браш. Тридцять-чотири літ тому, разом з бл. п. о. Володимиром Слюзарем, під пастирського опікою якого я почав своє душпастирство в Монреалі, я звершив Шлюб Марка батьків, Данила та Лізи Бородулі.

Подія нанесла мені спокій та натхнення. Особливе натхнення принесла стаття, яку я знайшов у Великодньому числі Українського Православного Слова,яке я підхопив у їхньому чудовому Храмі. Її написав юнак, який служить в американських збройних силах в Афганістані, о. Диякон Антоній Перкинз. Описує особливі виклики, яких зустрічає, як православний християнин у даних обставинах.

Звичайні виклики зв’язані з діями повстанців та з довгими годинами служби, відсутності дому та улюблених осіб як і труднощі військового життя. Але далі говорить він і про інший виклик – скритіший і ще більш небезпечний. За його словами: „Це небезпека забути про те, ким ти є і Кому належиш. Ось це ж сталось із Блудним сином. Він сам себе згубив, намагаючись себе знайти у чужому та впалому краю”.

Диякон Антоній завважує, що ми можемо себе згубити і в Північній Америці: „Наша культура, під впливом Лукавого та тисячоліть затуманеного гедонізму, наставлена на те, щоб нас загіпнотизувати і переробити наші ціннощі”. Стверджує він той захист проти цього, якого дає нам Церква через Таїнства, молитву та парафіяльне життя. Спокуси Ворога відводять нас і себе представляють немов би вони були чеснотами, пише о. Антоній: „Любов стає похоттю, піст стає дієтою, відпочинок стає лінню і так далі”.

У вояків і додатокові спокуси: „Наприклад обов’язок у війні може стати жадобою крові; чесна служба може стати вбивством; а бажання побідити повстанців може спокусити нас наслідувати їх та їхній підхід. Коли ці справи входять у життя, то вони можуть принести жахливі наслідки.” Молодий воїн Госпдній далі каже: „Навіть процес намагатися зрозуміти повстанців, їхню ідеологію та їхню тактику – небезпечний бо може спонукати нас їх осуджувати та демонізувати, прагнути щоб вони мучились і таке подібне”.

„Для вояків,” пише о.Антоній, „війна – ота чужа країна Блудного сина...Якщо вояки примиряться з війною – вона їх знищить”. Наш виклик – пригадувати кожного дня та години про те що, де б ми не були, ми належимо Ісусові і мусимо намагатися відображувати Господа з Його любов’ю, співчутливістю та святістю всюди, де тільки живемо й діємо.

Дорогі брати й сестри, пригадуймо щоденно оті виклики, яких з якими мусять давати раду ті, що служать на фронтах у нашому розчвареному світі. Молімось за них і постійно просімо Господа, щоб нам зсилав Свого Святого Духа, щоб ми проявляли цю чудову перемогу, яку ми святкуємо кожної неділі, а особливо у цей Великодній час, якими Христос переміг Своєю смертю смерть і приніс у це цей світ життя, яке ніколи не згасне. Амінь.

A Letter from Afghanistan from Deacon Anthony Perkins

I traveled to Minneapolis at the end of Bright Week 2007 to officiate, together with the Pastor of St. Katherine Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Fr. Peter Siwko, at the marriage of Mark Malarek and JoAnn Braasch. Thirty-four years earlier, I had officiated together, with Fr. Wladimir Sluzar of blessed memory, under whose pastoral guidance I began my pastoral ministry in Montreal, at the marriage of Mark’s parents, Daniel and Lisa Borodulia.

It was a restful and inspiring event. Among the inspiring moments was the discovery of an article in the Paschal issue of the Ukrainian Orthodox Word which I picked up at their lovely Church. It was by a young man who is serving as with the American forces in Afghanistan, Fr. Deacon Anthony Perkins. He described the special challenges he faces in this particular situation as an Orthodox Christian.

Obvious ones are the stresses brought on by the activity of the insurgents and those brought on by the long hours, the absence of home and loved ones and the rigours of military life. He goes on to speak of another challenge – a more subtle and more dangerous one. In his words: “This is the challenge of forgetting who (and whose) you are. This is what happened to the Prodigal: He lost himself by conforming his identity to that of the foreign and fallen land.”

Deacon Anthony notes that it is also possible to lose ourselves in North America as well: “Our culture, under the influence of the Evil One and millennia of deluded hedonism, is designed to hypnotize us and reorder our priorities”. He speaks of the defense that we Orthodox have against this in the Church, i.e. the Holy Mysteries, prayers and parish life. The temptations of the Enemy pervert and pass themselves off as virtues, notes Fr. Anthony: “Love becomes lust, fasting becomes dieting, rest becomes sloth and so on”.

Soldiers have additional temptations: “For example, duty in war can become bloodlust; honourable service in battle can become murder; and a desire to conquer the insurgent can tempt us to mirror him and his methods. When these lead to action, they can result in horrendous actions.” The young soldier of the Lord goes on to say “even the process of understanding the insurgents, their ideology, and their tactics is risky as it can lead us to judge/condemn them, demonize them, desire that they suffer, etc.”

“For soldiers”, writes Fr. Anthony, “war is the ‘foreign country’ of the Prodigal…If soldiers conform themselves to war, it will destroy them.” The challenge is to recall on a daily, hourly, basis that wherever we are, we belong to Jesus and must do our best to reflect the Lord in His love, compassion and holiness everywhere we live and act.

Dear brothers and sisters, let us daily recall the challenges faced by those on the front lines of our conflicted world. Let us pray for them and continually ask God to fortify and inspire all of us with His Holy Spirit, so that we may manifest this wonderful victory we celebrate every Sunday – and especially in this Paschal season – in which Christ overcame death by His death and brought into this world life which does not fade away.
