СВЯТІ ПРАВЕДНІ БОГООТЦІ ЙОАКИМ І АННА

«Вони породили нам Діву.»

На 22-го вересня (це – 9-го вересня на юліянському календарі), у день після Свята Різдва Пресвятої Богородиці ми святкуємо пам'ять її батьків, дідуся й бабусі Господа Ісуса, Якого ми радісно і вдячно визнаємо Істиною Людиною і Істиним Богом. Це досконале поєднання землі з Небом, людства і Божества, яким загоюється відчуження між Богом і Його людськими дітьми, знаходить початок у єднанню поміж цими двома праведниками Старого Завіту, Йоакима й Анни. Ми читаємо про них головно в Протоєвангелії Якова.

Св. Йоаким походив з племена Юдиного і був потомком Царя Давида. Анна була наймолодшою з-поміж трьох дочок священика Матфана з племена Левієвого. ЇЇ сестра Зоя була матір’ю Єлизавети, яка породила Св. Івана Предтечу. Йоаким і Анна були одружені 50 літ, коли їм прийшов великий смуток. Вони були жили спокійно й побожно, вживаючи третину свого майна для себе і віддаючи третину убогим і третину Храмові в Єрусалимі. У них не було дітей.

Одного дня Йоаким приніс жертву у Храм а Первосвященик Ісахар дорікав йому: «Ти не гідний приносити цю жертву тими бездітними руками». І діти і багатство люди Старого Завіту вважали ознаками того, що дане подружжя було Богу вгодне. Отож Йоаким і Анна пішли від Храму в глибокому смутку. Йоаким і покинув свій дім доглядати свою отару в горах. Анна залишилася вдома. Обоє знаходили заспокоєння в Молитві до Бога, Який дав був дитину Аврааму й Сарі, коли вони вже були в глибокій старості, і таким чином заснув єврейський народ.

Архангел Гавриїл навідав обидвох стареньких Угодників і сказав їм, що Бог почув їхню Молитву і дасть їм дівчинку, через яку всі народи землі одержать Благословення. Він сказав Йоакиму повернутися додому та що він зустріне Анну, яка очікуватиме його біля міської брами. Гавриїл теж сказав Анні, що вона саме там повинна очікувати свого мужа. Їхня зустріч і обійми зображені на одній з найбільш відомих Ікон цих двох Угодників Божих, які через наше Хрещення у Тіло Христове – теж наші духовні Прабатьки.

Бог дійсно сповнив Свою обітницю народженням Богородиці Марії, яке святкуємо 21-го вересня (8-го вересня за юліанським календарем). У цей день також святкуємо Божу Премудрість. Йог Премудрість – понад людське розуміння. Вона сповнюється у смиренних серцях і душах, які терпеливо переносять всякі іспити, постійно звертаючись до Бога о поміч, силу та провидіння, та які дякують Йому і прославляють Його за все. А Він невідмінно обертає все на добро у часі, який найбільш відповідає і Його створінню і тим душам, які так моляться і уповають.

HE HOLY AND RIGHTEOUS ANCESTORS OF GOD JOACHIM AND ANNA

“They have borne for us the Maiden.”

On September 22 (corresponds to September 9 on the Julian Calendar), the day after the Feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos, we celebrate the memory of her parents, the grandparents of Jesus, whom we joyously and gratefully proclaim as True Man and True God. This perfect union of earth and Heaven, of humanity and Divinity, which heals the alienation between God and His human children, finds a beginning in the union of these two righteous Saints of the Old Testament, Joachim and Anna. We read about them primarily in the ancient Protoevangelion of James.

St. Joachim was of the tribe of Judah and a descendant of King David. Anna was the youngest of three daughters of the priest Matthan of the tribe of Levi. Her sister Zoia was the mother of Elizabeth, who bore St. John the Forerunner. Joachim and Anna had been married for fifty years when a great sorrow came upon them. They had lived quietly and devoutly, using a third of their income for themselves and giving a third to the poor and a third to the temple in Jerusalem. They had no children.

One day when Joachim brought a sacrifice to the temple, the High Priest Issachar rebuked him: “You are not fit to bring this sacrifice with those childless hands”. Children, as well as prosperity, were considered to be a sign of God’s pleasure according to the spirituality of the people of the Old Testament. Joachim and Anna left the temple with heavy hearts. Joachim left his home to tend his flocks in the mountains. Anna remained at home. They both found solace in prayer to God Who had given a child to Abraham and Sarah in their old age and thus founded the Hebrew nation.

The Archangel Gabriel visited both elderly Saints to tell them that God had heard their prayers and that He would give them a daughter through whom all the nations of the world would be blessed. He told Joachim to return to his home. He would find Anna waiting for him at the city gate. Gabriel also told Anna to wait for him there. Their meeting and embrace is one of the most renowned among the Icons of these two Holy Ones, who through our Baptism into the Body of Christ are also our spiritual Ancestors.

God’s promise was indeed fulfilled by the birth of Mary, the Theotokos, which we celebrate on September 21 (September 8 on the Julian Calendar). We also celebrate God’s Holy Wisdom on this day. His Wisdom is beyond human understanding. It is fulfilled in humble hearts and souls which bear adversity with patience, looking continually to God for help, strength and guidance, and which thank and praise Him for all things. He invariably turns all things to good at the time which is best not only for His creation, but also for the souls who so pray and trust
