Responses to Priests

Question:

First,  when you go up for communion, after the priest gives you the Eucharist, what are you supposed to say (if anything) before you cross yourself.

Second, at the end of mass when you go up to kiss the cross the Priest is holding does he say "istos voscras"  and if he does what should your response be?  Voistino Voscras?

Response:

Dear Friend,

Thank you for your questions!

When receiving Holy Communion in the Eastern Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic tradition, the ideal practice is to first state your Christian name out loud (and nothing more) so the Priest may hear it and include it in the short prayer he will say before communicating you.  Our hands should be folded on our chest in an "X" or cross-wise position at this sacred moment when our Incarnate, Crucified and Risen Lord, God and Saviour, Jesus Christ comes to us in the Most Pure Mysteries.  Nothing should occupy our minds except the remembrance of the Divine Name of the Lord Jesus, the Son of God, asking Him to have mercy on me a sinner.

Having received Holy Communion, we should kiss the edge of the Chalice as an act of veneration of the Wounded Side of Christ from which we are nourished in the Holy Mysteries of His Most Holy Body and Blood.  When we cross ourselves, afterward, we should say the Jesus Prayer:  Touching our forehead, we say "Lord;" touching our stomach, we say "Jesus Christ;" touching our right shoulder, we say "Son of God" and then our left shoulder, "have mercy on me a sinner" ending with a bow. It is good to make the Sign of the Cross in this way in Church and also when we pass by a Church.

When we go to reverence the Holy Cross in the hands of the Priest, he will greet us according to the liturgical season and during the Paschal season, when he says, "Hristos Voskres," we indeed respond with "Voistynu Voskres."  However, there is nothing wrong with simply saying, in English, "Truly He is risen" in response to the Ukrainian language greeting.

At other times, the Priest will say, "Hristos posered nas" or "Christ is among us!" to which we reply, "I yeah, I boo-deh" or simply "He is and He will be."
