AKATHIST
For All the Icons of the
Mother of God
Kondak One
To the most pure Virgin, Lady chosen from all generations, who pours out unlimited mercy to the whole world and especially to our land of Rus*, let us sing out our hymns of praise for her miracles, appearances and wonderworking icons. For thou, who art full of grace, dost not despise our hymn singing, but accept it and grant joy unto us who cry out to thee: Rejoice, most pure Virgin, universal glory and joy!
* Original reads "Rossiystyev" of which the literal translation is "Russian". (webmaster)
Ikos One
The commander in chief Michael and all the heavenly powers sing to thee, O Lady, who art more honorable than the cherubim and more glorious beyond compare than the seraphim, being the Mother of God. And we sinners on earth, being similar to the bodiless powers and rejoicing with the first words of joy brought to thee by the archangel Gabriel and the righteous Elizabeth, together with them from the depths of our hearts, cry out to thee:
Rejoice, o blessed one!
Rejoice, for the Lord is with thee!
Rejoice, for blessed art thou among women!
Rejoice, for thou hast found grace in God!
Rejoice, for the Holy Ghost came upon thee and the power of the Most High hath overshadowed thee!
Rejoice, for having conceived in thy womb thou hast given birth to a Son and named Him Jesus!
Rejoice, for blessed is the Fruit of thy womb!
Rejoice, Mother of our Lord!
Rejoice, for thou hast believed that which would be perfected in thee by a word from the Lord!
Rejoice, for thy spirit hath rejoiced in God thy Saviour for these greetings!
Rejoice, most pure Virgin, universal glory and joy!
Kondak Two
Human reason cannot comprehend how the very Lord Himself could dwell in thy virginal womb and how thou didst remain a virgin even after the birth of thy Son, bowing down before the great mystery of the incarnation of God the Word, bestowing thy flesh on Him, nourishing Him with milk and carrying Him in thine arms, we salute thee joyfully with the angelic song: Alleluia!
Ikos Two
For all of the days of thy life on earth from thine meeting with Simeon in the Temple who prophesied to thee that a sword would pierce thy soul, thou didst participate in every earthly joy and sorrow until the morning of the first day after the Sabbath when thou again didst hear the voice of the angel telling thee, “Rejoice, blessed one, for thy Son hath risen from the tomb on the third day.” And with joyful voices we also offer thee our praises:
Rejoice, thou who didst give birth to the eternal King!
Rejoice, thou who hast blossomed forth the fruit of life for us!
Rejoice, faithful handmaiden of the Lord!
Rejoice, for all generation shall bless thee!
Rejoice, thou who hast adopted all of us at the Cross of thy Son!
Rejoice, thou who dost always reveal thy maternal love for us!
Rejoice, militant helper of the faith of Christians!
Rejoice, for thou dost pray to thy Son Christ our God for us!
Rejoice, ever blessed and immaculate one!
Rejoice, for thou dost ever remain in heavenly glory at the right side of God!
Rejoice, thou who dost shine brighter than the sun!
Rejoice, most pure Virgin, universal glory and joy!
Kondak Three
O most pure Lady, how many different ways hast thou strengthened the human race in its faith in God and His Son? How many times hast thou given us thy miracle working icons? How often hast thou appeared in visions and honorable dreams to the ascetics? Who can count all of thy miracles? What words of praise can exalt thee worthily? Who cannot bless thee, most holy Virgin? What lips can remain silent when all creation, the ranks of angels and the human race rejoiceth for thee, o blessed one? And we the unworthy ones will never be able to remain silent, o Mother of God, but to speak of thy powers and to sing of thee to God: Alleluia!
Ikos Three
Saints Ignatius the God-bearer and Dionysius the Areopagite, gazing upon thee, O most pure Lady, were not able to find the words to describe thy shining face and thy divine grace and power, and the flock was not scattered, even though all were not able to see thee, o heavenly Virgin. But thou, out of love for those who believe in thy Son, hast ordered the holy apostle and evangelist Luke to paint thine honorable image with thy Son the Divine Child, so that all nations and peoples on earth who would gaze upon it, for all time would be able to lift their thoughts up to thee thyself, most blessed Lady. And we sinners, bending our knees before this image call upon thee, o all hymned one:
Rejoice, thou who hast said of this original image, “My grace and power will be with it always!”
Rejoice, thou who hast bestowed it upon our land of Russia in the holy city Vladimir!
Rejoice, for today the most glorious city of Moscow is brilliantly adorned with this image!
Rejoice, for by means of this icon thou hast especially granted us grace and mercy!
Rejoice, for thy countenance hath been portrayed miraculously in thy church in the city of Lydda!
Rejoice, for thou hast filled the apostles and all the faithful with grace by this miracle!
Rejoice, for thou has been the source of miracles for those who venerate thee before this image!
Rejoice, for thou has taught the apostles to cry out to thee, “most holy Mother of God, help us!”
Rejoice, for during thy lifetime thou hast visited the holy land of Mount Athos and turned this place into thine estate!
Rejoice, for thou hast sent Nina, the equal to the apostles, to illumine thine earthly lot, the land of Iberia!
Rejoice, glorious fulfillment of the prophets and praise of the apostles!
Rejoice, most pure Virgin, universal glory and joy!
Kondak Four
When the enemy of the human race loosed persecutions upon Christians and gave the bodies of the faithful over to torture and death, how often hast thou appeared as their strengthener in this ascetic feat, as their instructor in the Christian faith, and the one who grants them virtues and wisdom? And now these holy martyrs who suffered great torments, the brides of Christ Catherine, Barbara and others accompany thee in thy encounters with the chosen ones of God on earth, and they sing out to God for thee the hymn: Alleluia!
Ikos Four
The pious and equal to the apostles prince Vladimir, who lead his people of the Russian land to Christ, after his baptism founded the first church in the city of Kiev in honor of thy most holy Nativity, o sovereign Lady of the universe, and gave a tithe of his income to adorn it. And from those days until now, o most blessed one, thou hast especially and uninterruptedly showered grace upon our land and granted it thy great mercy. And as a special gift of thy benevolence and thy favor thou hast made the city of Kiev thine estate, and wondrously thou hast granted it the miraculous icon of thy Dormition and thou hast ordered thy church be established in the monastery of Saints Anthony and Theodosius. Who can reckon the multitude of people who with tears bend their knees before this most pure image? What other city and village hath ever seen such a multitude of monasteries and miraculous icons? Who can report all of the miracles which have taken place at this image? We are not going to keep thy good works hidden, o most pure one, but with heartfelt emotion we cry out to thee:
Rejoice, thou who art full of grace, at thy falling asleep hast not abandoned us!
Rejoice, thou who wast lifted up from the earth in the arms of thy Son!
Rejoice, thou, who upon entering the highest realms, doth enjoy His glory!
Rejoice, thou who hast testified through the apostle Thomas of thine ascent into heaven in the flesh!
Rejoice, fiery throne of the Lord raised up from earth to the heavenly kingdom!
Rejoice, thou who hast shown in a vision a grand image of the church of the Kiev Caves!
Rejoice, for thou thyself hast given the relics of the holy martyrs and gold for its foundation!
Rejoice, for thou hast presented the holy icon Dormition with thine own hands to the saintly founders!
Rejoice, for miraculously thou hast indicated the site of thy church and with heavenly fire hast purified this site!
Rejoice, for thou hast accepted the angel-like hymns of praise of the monks before the miraculous icon of thy Dormition!
Rejoice, for thou dost change the sorrows of all those who flee unto thee into joy!
Rejoice, most pure Virgin, universal glory and joy!
Kondak Five
O all immaculate one, when thou didst look down from the heights of thy heavenly dwelling place where thou didst abide in glory with thy Son upon the sorrows of thy servants in the city of Kazan, it was as if on account of an angry divine visitation the Christian faith was desecrated by the wicked Moslem religion, thou has benevolently willed to reveal thine icon glorifying it with miracles, that being fortified with the signs of thy grace the Christ-loving people would faithfully cry out to thee: Rejoice, sincere mediatrix of the Christian race! And to God the Creator of all: Alleluia!
Ikos Five
Desiring to show drops of miracles to all the sorrowful, suffering, wronged and wayward, thou has granted, o all merciful Lady, especially thy grace with the miracle working icons called Joy of All Who Sorrow, Assuage My Sorrow, and Rescuer of the Lost. A whole sea of tears hath been shed before them by those in sorrows and suffering. To whom among the lost, who has prayed to thee, hast thou not stretched out a helping hand? We thank thee, o all hymned one, for all of the mercy thou hast bestowed upon the sinful human race, and with our whole soul we cry out to thee tenderly:
Rejoice, blessed Virgin Mother of God, joy of all who sorrow!
Rejoice, mother of mercy!
Rejoice, swift helper of those in trials and tribulations!
Rejoice, our joy, save us from every evil and assuage our sorrows!
Rejoice, for by thine intercessions our temporal griefs are relieved!
Rejoice, for by the revealing of these icons thou dost reveal signs of grace in the Church!
Rejoice, thou whose icons are like pillars of fire that drive out the darkness of sin!

As from ancient times until now thou hast covered with thine omophorion the entire Christian race, and even more so the land of Russia, and the multitude of monasteries which were established in it. Thus, the Orthodox people, gazing upon thine icon, on it as if it were thou thyself with the archangels, angels, the Forerunner, the Theologian and the whole rank of saints interceding for us before the Lord, bowing their heads and bending their knees, call upon thee tenderly:

Wipe out our tears and lamentation!” Having receiving what was desired, they all cried out to thee, o pure one, “Rejoice, o Lady, merciful intercessor for us before God!” Thy Son and God, singing the angelic song: Alleluia!

Who among the faithful, when visiting the city of Moscow, does not venerate thy most pure Iberian and God-Loving icons, o Sovereign Lady Mother of God? Who can count those who are kissing both day and night on the feast day of thy God-Loving icon?
