Akathists

We have recently received a number of inquiries about the Akathists that have appeared on our website.  A word of explanation is in order.

An Akathist (literally a service during which one stands upright) is an Orthodox Christian hymn dedicated to one of the Persons of the Holy Trinity, the Theotokos, a Saint, the Cross or even some holy event.  Akathists continue to be written to this day and are modeled after the 6th century hymn to the Theotokos, which is especially celebrated during Great Lent.  They are composed of thirteen parts and a prayer. Please see www.orthodoxwiki.org/akathist.  They are often read or chanted by laity as well as clergy.

Some of these Akathists are familiar to Ukrainian Orthodox faithful (as listed below) while some have been composed by Alexander Roman, a longtime contributer to our site and are not served in Ukrainian Orthodox Churches.  Some are even dedicated to Saints and apparitions of the Theotokos which are part of the faith treasury of the Western Church.  They are published for your information and enjoyment.

Our Special Ministry of Prayer and Intercession: Experiencing God’s blessings It has become almost common parlance for people, even those without strong religious convictions or habits of spiritual practice, to say, “I’m praying for this or that.” Yet, what does it mean to truly pray as Christians and in accordance with the Will of God? How do we pray and support one another in prayer?

Prayer Intentions in response to the article above

Keeping Time with God: Ways of praying the Orthodox Divine Office We know from the Acts of the Apostles that the early followers of the Lord Jesus prayed at certain hours of the day and night. This practice evolved into the daily prayer of the Church, which is for ALL Christians, the “Horologion” or the Divine Office or Praises. There are more ways than one in which we may fulfill the command of our Lord to pray always and keep watch with the Church . . .
