Peter I took this icon to keep with his army. The Lutheran soldiers of King Charles XII of Sweden went to burn down the Church in which the icon was enshrined, but to their great mystification, the Church would not catch fire despite their concerted efforts. Charles then asked Hetman Mazepa what shrine was housed in the Church that protected it from burning. When the Hetman told the king about the Kaplunivska icon, the king then asked where it was now. When the Hetman told the king that the tsar had it, King Charles became sullen and said that it was doubtful if they would ever defeat Peter as a result. )
