St Vassily is the baptismal patron of St Volodymyr the Great and iconography of the enlightener of Rus’-Ukraine sometimes depicts him as St Basil, teaching the faith to the people.

January 2/15  Repose of St Seraphim of Sarov (1833 - tonsured at the Kyiv Caves Lavra, he was sent to Sarov by the Ihumen, St Dositheus).  St Sylvester of the Kyiv Caves (12th c.).  Commemoration of Archimandrite Joanniky Golatovsky (1688).  A friend of Bl. Lazar Baranovich, Joanniky produced a great scholarly, literary heritage. New Hieromartyr St Dmitri Shpakovsky (1942).

January 8/21  St Gregory, wonderworker of the Kyiv Caves (1093).  St Gregory, hermit of the Kyiv Caves (14th c.).  New Hieromartyr Priest Isidore and 72 companions at Yuriev - Dorpats in Estonia (1472, martyred at the city founded by St Yaroslav the Wise  and  honoured as saints of the Kyivan Metropolia).

January 9/22  St Jonah (Miroshnichenko), wonderworker and founder of the Holy Trinity Monastery in Kyiv (1902).   Commemoration of Stefan Yavorsky, Metropolitan of Ryazan and Murom (1722) – defender of Orthodoxy.  Commemoration of Sche-archimandrite Havriil (Starodub), Native of Poltava (2010) and of his spiritual Father, Sche-archimandrite Vitaly (Sidorenko).

January 10/23  New Hieromartyr Anatolij (Hrisyuk), Metropolitan of Odessa (1938).

January 11/24  St Iov (Knyahinitsky), Ihumen of Manjava Skete.  Chernihivska-Eletska icon of the Most Holy Theotokos.

January 12/25  Icon of the Mother of God the “Milk-Giver” on Mt Athos (especially venerated by many Kozaks who retired to the Skete of St Elias).
