Успіння Пресвятої Владичиці нашої Богородиці і Вседіви Марії

„Радійте! Я з вами по всі дні вашого життя!”

Це Свято, що припадає 28-го серпня (тобто 15-го серпня на Юліянському календарі), таке значне, що його попереджає Піст, який триває 13 днів. Він має назву „Успенський піст”, а українці часто називають його „Спасівкою”, тому що в ньому припадає Свято Господнього Преображення, „Спаса”.

Ми постимо, щоб виявити нашу солідарність з Апостолами та іншими Християнами 1-го століття Р.Б., яких так підтримувала, провадила та заохочувала та „Благословенна між жінками”, що не лише породила Господа, але також супроводжала Його під час всього Його земного служіння, і коли настав час поєдналася з Ним у переході від життя земного до небесного. Апостоли і перші християни виявляли жалобу з приводу відходу їхньої твердої Опори, Богородиці, і ми теж виявляємо жалобу.

Подібно до них ми також радіємо чудовою вісткою про те, що її гріб знайшли порожним, коли Апостол Тома прибув три дні після її успіння і побажав побачити її найцінніше Тіло. А скоро по цьому вона й появляється Своїм улюбленим, які зібралися разом ломити хліб, і промовляє: „Радійте! Я з вами по всі дні вашого життя!”

Від тих раннії днів Церква переконана, що Господь розділив з Марією Свою перемогу над смертю, воскресаючи Її з гробу і підносячи Її до Себе в Небесних оселях. І в той сам час віримо, що вона також завжди з нами Своїм заступництвом і Своїм прикладом (що для нас є і вткликом) постійної цілковитої відданості Богові.

Як усі побожні, що спочивають у Господі, час і простір вже не є перепоною для їхньої досконалої єдності зо всіма тими, що люблять і поважають їх. Отож ми голосимо, що Пресвята Богородиця вічно радіє на Небесах зі Своїм Сином і всіма Блаженними а також завжди з нами, які намагаємось сповняти Господню Волю тут на землі.

Успенський Піст також нагадує нам про те, що й нам треба готуватися на власний відхід від цього світу. Коли навіть Пресвята Богородиця мала перейти через ворота смерти, то ми також мусимо готуватися до цього смиренно та з покаянням, із вдячністю до Господа за всі Його дари, включно з упокоєнням, та з вірою та любов’ю.

Ми пригадуємо, що наш відхід не перерве нашу єдність з тими, яких ми любимо, та яких залишаємо продовжувати зеину мандрівку, бо в Христі ми завжди будемо разом.

Тому що життя в Христі прекрасне і пахуче ми також святимо квіти та зілля у це Свято Успення Божої Матері. І приготовляємося зустріти новий Церковний Рік, що настане через дещо більше чим дві неділі (1-го вересня, що відповідає 14-му вересня на Григоріянському календарі).

Наша Наймиліша Улюблена Мамо! Тримай нас завжди близько до Себе і до Твого Сина, до Якого Ти вічно звертаєш нашу увагу в тисячі Святих Іконах, в яких Ти Його пригортаєш. Пресвята Богородице спаси нас! Амінь.

The Dormition of our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary

“Rejoice I am with you all the days of your lives!”

This Feast, which falls on August 28 (corresponds to August 15 on the Julian Calendar) is of such great significance that it is preceded by a Fast which lasts for thirteen days. It is called the Dormition Fast. In Ukrainian it is commonly called “Spasivka” since the Feast of the Lord’s Transfiguration (“Spasa”) falls during this time.

We fast to show solidarity with the Apostles and the other Christians of the first century A.D. who were greatly sustained, guided and encouraged by the dear Lady, who not only gave birth to the Lord, but also accompanied Him in all His earthly ministry, and at last joined Him in the passage from earthly to celestial life. The Apostles and early Christians mourned the passing of their firm Support, the Theotokos, and so do we.

Like them we also rejoice in the wonderful news that her tomb was found to be empty when the Apostle Thomas came three days after her falling asleep and wished to see her most precious Body. Shortly after she appeared to her beloved ones as they gathered to break bread together and said: “Rejoice I am with you all the days of your lives!”

From those early days the Church has been convinced that the Lord shared with Mary His victory over death by raising her from the tomb and taking her to be in the heavenly mansions with Him. At the same time we also believe that she is indeed ever with us in her intercessions and her constant example (which is also a challenge for us) of complete and total submission to God.

As with all the godly who repose in the Lord, time and space are no longer a barrier to their perfect unity with all those who love and honour them. Thus we proclaim that the Most Holy Theotokos ever rejoices in Heaven with her Son and all the Blessed, and also that she is always with us who still struggle to do the Lord’s will here upon earth.

The Dormition Fast also reminds us of the necessity of preparing for our own departure from this earth. Since even the Most Holy Theotokos had to pass through the portals of death, we must also prepare to do so with humility and penitence, with gratitude to the Lord for all of His gifts, including repose, and with faith and love.

We recall that our passing will not sunder our unity with those beloved whom we leave to continue the earthly path for in Christ we shall always be together.

Because life in Christ is lovely and fragrant, we also bless flowers and herbs on this Day of the Dormition. And we prepare to greet the new Church year which will come in just a little over two weeks (September 1, which corresponds to September 14 on the Gregorian Calendar).

Our Precious and Beloved Mother, keep us ever near to You and to Your Son towards Whom You continually direct our attention in the thousands of Holy Icons in which You hold Him close. Most Holy Theotokos, save us. Amen.
