Everything Speaks of Him!

Very Reverend Ihor Kutash kutash@unicorne.org

(Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost)

Today’s Gospel (Luke 8:5-15) speaks to us of the seed of the Gospel, the good news from Heaven, which Jesus brought into this world and which He so generously sows everywhere - all over our planet. Today on our planet there are many Bibles, many radio and television broadcasts, many Churches and missions which proclaim this Good News. They tell us about God’s love and about the pardon and restoration He offers to all - especially to all who have become aware of their sins and their vulnerability. They tell us of the continual possibility of growth and transformation under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The Good News is given in many other ways as well - ways much too numerous to mention, many of them unexpected, startling! Why, this world belongs to God - everything speaks of Him, of His wisdom and power, of His providence and care for every living being, for everything on this great planet and this seemingly infinite universe. When we ponder the matter we shall see that, ultimately, no one really has an excuse for not hearing, not seeing, and not submitting to God’s reign which blesses all of creation.

Lets just look around us in this wonderful season of autumn! See how splendid the trees are decked out in their golden glory! What a glorious panorama God has prepared for all who will pause and take notice! Let us marvel at it! Wonder helps us realize how great and wise is the Creator of all this beauty. How kind and loving He is to make a world where such wonders abound. It helps us realize what a unique privilege it is for us to be here admiring His creation and knowing that He is the One who made it all.

Let us also take this sense of wonder into our observation of the world of fellow human beings around us. Let us take notice of how much goodness and kindness is being shown all around us. Let us notice how many people are ready to sacrifice so much for those they love, how very often people do help those they see are in need, how people’s instincts generally turn to friendship and peace, and how the cruelty and nastiness we see in people are the result of wounds and illnesses rather than what these people are by nature. In the world of people, too, we see the wonders of the Creator Who made them in His image.

Fortified by wonder, let us enter into a life of intimate union with God who is so great, so good and so loving. Let us do this especially because, as Orthodox Christians we have received His teaching in our Church, which proclaims so clearly the meaning of the wonderful things we find and observe in nature and in human beings.

God is calling us, inviting us, wooing us. He has sown His good seed in our hearts, in our souls, in our minds and everywhere in the world. Let us respond to Him. Let us seek Him! Let us know Him. Let us turn to Him with everything we care about, everything we are, everything we long to be. Let us trust Him and believe that He will take care of us, that He will lead us and guide us to become the very best we can be, that He will continue to prepare, shape and mold us so that we can be with Him forever in His Kingdom of Light and Unceasing Wonder!
