Різдво Господа Бога і Спаса нашого Ісуса Христа
Сьогодні святкуємо великий Празник Народження на землі Сина Божого, Господа, Бога і Спаса нашого Ісуса Христа, Другої Особи Пресвятої Тройці. Він народився на світі, щоб бути з нами, щоб нас піднести до гідності дітей Божих.
Св. Іван Золотоустий, якого Літургію служимо майже кожної неділі у наших Храмах, запитує: «Чи є щось рівне цьому Праникові? Бог - на землі, людина - на Небі. Ангели служать людям; люди спілкуються з Ангелами та іншими Небесними Силами». А Святитель Григорій Палама так висловлюється по-богословському про цей Празник: «Син Божий став Людиною, щоб показати, на яку висоту Він нас підносить…; показати, в яку безодню зла ми впали, що потрібно було втілення Бога». І додає: «Щоб з’єднати розділених єством людей і Бога, Сам Христос приймає обидва їства» цебто стає Богочоловіком.
Про цю Тайну чудово і також глибоко по-богословському співають і наші українські колядки. Ось наприклад відома колядка «На небі зірка» : «Хвиля спасення нам завитала,/ Бог в Вифлеємі раждаєсь:/ Щоб землю з Небом в одно злучити,/ Христос родився – славіте!». А друга, менш відома («Бог природу»), співає: «Бог природу, Бог природу,/ Щоби відкупити, посадити/ У Сіоні на Троні,/ Сам смирився, воплотився,/ Прийшов в світ і по вік був і буде Бог!»
А чому це вчинив Господь Бог? Чому хотів Він нас з’єднати з Небом, щоб були ми з Ним на троні? Св. Іван Богослов пояснює це нам: «Так бо Бог полюбив світ, що дав Сина Свого Єдинородного, щоб кожен, хто вірує в Нього, не згинув, але мав життя вічне» (Іван 3:16). А Св. Ап. Павло пише в Посланні до Римлян: «Бог доводить [виявляє] свою любов до нас тим, що Христос умер за нас, коли ми були ще грішниками» (5:8). Отож уся причина Народження Сина Божого для нас це - безмежна любов Отця Небесного до нас.
Чи ми коли усвідомлювали собі, що такі ми улюблені Богом, що Син Божий, Другa Особa Пресвятої Тройці, ради нас прийняв людську істоту, ради нас і постраждав – і воскрес із мертвих, назавжди поборовши смерть? Усвідомлення цього – найбільша радість! Найбільша ця спонука й шанувати самого себе, якого/яку так полюбив Бог. Найбільша це спонука й любити ближніх, що є Божий дар для нас, щоб у них, у служінню їм, ми пізнавали Бога й Йому служили, - Тому, що так Він нас полюбив нас і нам послужив.
У цій же любові знаходимо відповіді на всі болючі питання життєві. У цій любові знаходимо відповідь на болі й страждання в світі. У цій любові знаходимо тривали мир, якого від нас ніхто й ніколи відібрати не зможе. До цієї свідомості навіть був дійшов славний Наполеон, який, після своїх невдач стати володарем світу, із заслання на острові Св. Олени, писав так: «Христос не завойовував держав і не потрясав світом, як ми. Він просто полюбив людей i Себе віддав за них.» І Царство в людських серцях здобув Христос - вічне!
Нехай же ця любов наповнить і оновить наші серця! Нехай відкриє нам можливість щиро полюбити одне одного – і цілий світ! Нехай горить вона полум’ям надії на краще майбутнє у серцях усіх нуждаючих, голодаючих, гонимих у нашому світі. Нехай міцно горить вона і в серцях наших братів і сестер в Україні! Нехай вона перетворює світ на Царство Боже! Нехай звершиться ціль, ради якої воплотився Цар над царями і Володар над володарями.
Христос народжується! Славімо Його!
The Nativity of our Lord, God and Saviour Jesus Christ
Today we celebrate the great Feast of the Nativity upon the earth of the Son of God, our Lord, God and Saviour, Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity. He was born in this world to be with us, to elevate us to the dignity of the children of God.
St. John Chrysostom, whose Liturgy we celebrate nearly every Sunday, asks: “Is there anything to equal this Feast? God is on the earth and man is in Heaven; the Angels serve men, and men have communion with the Angels and other Heavenly Powers”. St. Gregory Palamas offers this theological elucidation of this Feast: “The Son of God became Man to show the loftiness of the dignity to which He raises us…; to show [also] the depths of evil into which we had fallen, for it was necessary for the Son of God to become incarnate [to raise us from these depths]”. He adds: “In order to unite these separate essences, the human and the Divine, Christ Himself accepts both essences”, that is, He becomes the God-man [Theanthropos].
Our Ukrainian Christmas carols also speak, with wonderful and profound theological insight, of this Mystery. For example, the familiar carol “Na Nebi Zirka” (“A Star in the Heavens”) says: “The time of salvation has come for us –/ God is born in Bethlehem:/ To unite as one earth and Heaven Christ was born – praise Him!” Another, less known, “Boh pryrodu” (“God Creation”) says: “God Creation, God creation/ To redeem, to place/ In Zion on the Throne,/ Himself humbled, was incarnate,/ Came to earth and from eternity was and is God!”.
But why did the Lord God do this? Why did He wish to unite us with Heaven, so that we might be with Him upon the Throne? St. John the Divine explains in his Gospel: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16). The Apostle Paul writes in his Letter to the Romans: “God shows His love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us” (5:8). Thus, we can see that the reason for the Birth of the Son of God among us was the fathomless, boundless love for us of God the Father.
Have we ever realized that God loves us so much, that God the Son, the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity, took on human nature for us, suffered for us – and rose from the dead, utterly, for all time, defeating the power of death? To fully realize this is the greatest of joys! It offers the greatest motivation to respect ourselves since God loves us so much. It also offers the greatest motivation to love our neighbours, God’s gift to us, so that in them, in serving them, we might know and serve God – the One Who loves us so much and came to serve us.
In this love we find the answers to all our painful questions about life. In this love we find the answers to the pain and suffering in our world. In this love we find lasting peace, which no one can ever take away from us. The renowned Napoleon came to this realization, after his failure to become a world ruler, writing this from exile on the island of St. Helena: “Christ did not conquer nations, nor did He shake the world, as we have done. He simply loved people and gave Himself for them.” And He won an eternal Kingdom in human hearts!
May this love fill and renew our hearts. May it open the way for us to truly love one another and all the world. May it burn with the fire of hope for a better tomorrow in the hearts of all who suffer, all who hunger, all who are persecuted in our world. May it burn brightly in the hearts of our brothers and sisters in Ukraine. May it transform our world into the Kingdom of God. May it accomplish that for which the King of kings and Lord of lords was incarnate.
Christ is being born! We glorify Him!
