«Він – ясно сяюча зірка в Церкві» (Кондак)
На 5-го березня за Григоріанським календарем (тобто 20-го березня за Юліанським) ми святкуємо пам'ять Православного Святого у день його упокоєння в Бозі 789 р. Це - Святитель Лев, що був Єпископом у Сицилії у м. Катанії під вулканічною горою Етною. А народився в травні 709 р. і виховувався в м. Равенні в Італії. Лев був відомий за свою ласкавість та щедрість. Ідучи за прикладом Великого Доброго Пастиря він проявляв велику любов до чужинців та вбогих. Господь дав йому дар творити чуда та сцілювати людей з різних недуг.
Тоді коли Християнські душпастирі на Сході боролись за утвердження віри в Боговтілення повертаючи Ікони до Церков, душпастирі на Заході мусіли змагатися проти язичництва та чаклунства.
В часі Св. Льва єпископства жив у Катанії чародій, який називався Іліодор (це ім’я означає «дар сонця»), який дивував людей фальшивими чудами. Колись був він Християном але потім таємно зрікся Спасителя і повернувся до давніх язичницьких традицій. Св. Лев часто намагався переконати Іліодора перестати зводити людей своїми навчаннями та фальшивими чудами, а натомість повернутися до Милосердного Владики, Якого зраджував, та його зусилля були марними.
Одного разу Іліодор відважився зайти в Храм тоді коли Єпископ Лев очолював Богослужіння. Він почав діяти свої чари і спокушувати вірних, творячи метушню підчас Відправи. Бачачи, як люди стоять у подиві з фокусів Іліодора, Св. Лев вирішив, що час на смиренні заклики проминув.
Він спокійно відійшов від Престолу, прив’язав свій Омофор навколо шиї Іліодора і вивів його з Храму на подвір’я. Там зарядив, щоб приготовили велике вогнище і запалили його. Тоді не вагаючись ані трошки і держачи Іліодора цупко своїм Омофором Владика Лев ступив у полум’я. І ось так постояли вони в вогні. Та Св. Льва захищала Сила Божа і він остався цілим, подібно як було з Трьома побожними Юнаками в печі, про яких описано в Старому Завіті в 3-ій голові Книги Св. Пророка Даниїла. Але Іліодор виявився несправжнім «даром сонця» бо ж вогонь його спалив.
Це чудо принесло Св. Льву славу ще за час його земного служіння. А коли Преподобний упокоївся близько 780-го р. то жінка кровоточива, що стояли біля його домовини уціліла.
Тіло Святого зложили в Храмі Св. Мучениці-Діви Лукії – цей Храм він сам був построїв. Пізніше його мощі перенесли до Храму Св. Мартина Милосердного, Єпископа Турського.
За молитви Св. Льва, хороброго, як справжній лев, дай Господи, щоб і ми відважно і відверто говорили про ласку Господню і відстоювали полум’я спокус у цей час Посту.
“He is a brightly shining star in the Church” (Kontakion)
On March 5 on the Gregorian Calendar (which is February 20 on the Julian) we celebrate the memory of an Orthodox Saint of Sicily on the day of his repose in the Lord in 789. It is St. Leo who was Bishop of Catania beneath the volcanic Mt. Etna. He was born in May of 709 and raised in Ravenna in Italy. Leo was renowned for his kindness and charity. Following the example of the Great and Good Shepherd, He showed great love for strangers and for the poor. The Lord made him worthy of the gifts of working miracles and healing people of various illnesses.
While Christian Pastors in the East were struggling for the confirmation of the Incarnation by restoring Icons to God’s Churches, the Pastors in the West had to struggle against the persistence of paganism and sorcery.
During St. Leo’s episcopacy, there lived in Catania a sorcerer named Heliodorus (the name means “gift of the sun”), who amazed the people with false miracles. He had been a Christian, but later secretly renounced the Saviour and returned to the old pagan ways. St. Leo often strove to convince Heliodorus to cease from leading people astray with his teaching and false miracles and instead to return to the Good Master he was betraying, but his efforts were in vain.
Once, Heliodorus even dared to enter the Church during the time that Bishop Leo was presiding at Divine Services. He used his sorcery and tempted the faithful, creating a disturbance so as to disrupt the Service. Seeing the people in awe of Heliodorus’ tricks, St. Leo decided that the time for humble entreaties had passed.
He calmly left the Altar, and tying his Omophorion around the sorcerer’s neck, led him out of the Church and into the courtyard. There he directed that a bonfire be built and ignited. Not wavering in the least, and holding Heliodorus fast with his Omophorion, Bishop Leo boldly walked into the flames. There they stood in the fire. Protected by God’s power, St. Leo remained unharmed as were the Three Holy Youths in the furnace spoken of in the Old Testament in the third chapter of the Book of the Holy Prophet Daniel. But Heliodorus proved to be no true “gift of the sun” for he was consumed by the flames.
This miracle brought St. Leo fame during his lifetime. When the venerable one reposed, a woman with an issue of blood who was standing next to his coffin received healing.
The Saint’s body was placed in the Church of the Virgin-Martyr Lucy of Syracuse, a Church he himself had established. Later, his relics were translated to the church of St. Martin the Merciful, Bishop of Tours.
Through the prayers of St. Leo, bold as a lion, may we too boldly proclaim the mercies of the Lord and withstand the fiery flames of temptations during this time of fasting.
