Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost: The Good One!

Давайте, сьогодні застановімося над словами Господа Ісуса до юнака, що прийшов до нього шукаючи вічного життя, як написано в Недільній Євангелії (Матвія 19:16-26). Ісус відповів на його запит: «Учителю Добрий, що маю зробити я доброго, щоб мати життя вічне?» ось такими словами: «Ніхто не є Добрий, крім Бога Самого. Коли ж хочеш ввійти до життя, то виконай заповіді».

Як завжди, бачимо що Ісус усю пошану віддає Своєму Отцю Небесному, Якого Він об’явив і нашим Отцем. Він на світ прийшов на те, щоб об’явити нам Отця і Волю Отця Своїм навчаннями і Своїми й ділами. Ми, що рішили йти за Ісусом дотримуючись своїх обітниць і посвячення при Хрещенні, знаємо, що Ісус також безкінечно Добрий. Він досконалий Образ Свого Отця. І дійсно, як пише Св. Павло: «[В] Ньому тілесно живе вся повнота Божества» (Колосян 2:9). І знову тут Ісус проявляє Своє смирення (таке глибоке, що Він прийняв смерть на Хресті і навіть до  Аду зійшов, щоб визволити душі, які очікували на Його Пришестя) тим, що вказує на цю якість у Його Отцеві замість приймати таке окреслення Самого Себе.

Розмова Христа з багатим юнаком зображена в цьому малюнкові Гайнріха Гофмана (1824-1911), що знаходиться в славному Храмі Риверсайд у Гарлемі в місті Нью-Йорку. (Цей же митець також намалював картину «Христос у гетсиманському саді», яка, як кажуть, мабуть найчастіше скопійований малюнок у світі). Почувши юнака заяву про те, що він всі заповіді заховував а все одно відчував якусь недостачу, Ісус йому сказав: «Коли хочеш бути досконалим, піди, продай добра свої та й убогим роздай, і матимеш скарб ти на небі. Потому приходь та й іди вслід за Мною». Саме цей момент зображений у малюнкові Гофмана.

Та чи було це добрим наставляти юнака, що шукав досконалості, продати все, що він мав? Чи дійсно хоче Бог того, щоб ми були бідняками? Чи ж це не гроші і маєтки дають людям можливість чинити багато добра в світі? Як же зможемо ми стати добродійниками, якщо не матимемо того, що дало б нам змогу втілювати деякі з тих мрій та планів наших на славу Божу і на добро людства?

Відповідь – найкращий дар, який ми тільки могли б мати і з другими ділитися це – життя з Богом. Проблема з маєтками не в тому, що не добре їх мати – дійсно добре мати їх. Та в тому трагедія, що вони часто стають людині важливіші чим Той, Хто дає нам змогу їх здобувати, і за цим, важливішими чим ті, ради яких Бог їх нам дає – наші брати й сестри, наші діти та онуки, наші ближні.

Якщо б був цей юнак готовим радо продати все і віддати убогим, щоб стати досконалим, це показало б , щоб для нього – Бог Самий найбільше радість. Але він засмутився почувши слова Ісуса. Ясно, що його маєток, хоч би на той час, був важливішим для нього чим Бог та його брати й сестри. Ісус про все це знав наперед. Але тому, що юнак серйозно шукав досконалості (а саме цього бажає Бог від нас усіх), Ісус йому показав, що ще багато дечого треба виконати в його серці та думках перед тим, як осягнути цієї цілі, до якої змагався.

Брати й сестри! Це навчання важне для кожної людини, яка живе на світі. Молімось і за багатих і за вбогих. Молімось і за себе, щоб не впали ми в спокусу: чи то легковажити земним добром – і таким чином не бути добрими розпорядниками їх, чи то цінити це добро вище будь-чого іншого – а тобто й вище Бога й наших братів та сестер..

Today let us reflect on Jesus' words to the rich young man who came to Him seeking eternal life, as recorded in the Sunday Gospel (Matthew 19:16-26). Jesus responded to his query: "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?" with these words: "There is only One Who is good. Keep the commandments if you want to enter life". 

As always, we find Jesus directing all honour to His Heavenly Father, Whom He has revealed to be also our Father. He came to earth to reveal His Father and His Father's will by teaching about it and doing it. We who have decided to follow Jesus by keeping our baptismal vows and commitments, also know that Jesus also is infinitely Good. He is the perfect Icon of His Father. In fact. as St. Paul has written: “[In] Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form” (Colossians 2:9). Once again, Jesus’ humility (so profound that He accepted death upon the Cross and even descended to Hades to rescue the souls who had been awaiting His coming) is shown by His pointing out the quality of goodness in His Father rather than in Himself.

Christ’s discussion with the rich young man is depicted in this painting by Heinrich Hofmann (1824-1911) which is to be found in the famous Riverside Church in Harlem, New York City. (The same artist painted “Christ in Gethsemane” which is said to be the most copied painting in the world.) Upon hearing the young man’s testimony that he had kept the commandments but still felt that he lacked something, Jesus said to him: "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." This very moment is depicted in Hofmann’s painting.

Was it, in fact, good to direct the young man who was seeking perfection to sell everything he possessed? Does God want us to be paupers? Is it not the case that money and possessions give people the power to do a lot of good in this world? How can we become true philanthropists without the means for bringing about some of the dreams and plans we have for the glory of God and the good of humanity?

The answer is that the best gift we can ever have and the best one we can ever give is life with God. The problem with possessions is not that they are not good to have - they are. But, tragically, they often become more important to a person than the One Who gives us the means to obtain them, and, it follows, more important than the ones for whose sake God gives them to us - our brothers and sisters, our children and grandchildren, our neighbours.

Had the young man been ready to cheerfully sell everything and give it to the poor in order to become perfect, this would have shown that, for him, God Himself was the greatest joy. But he became sad upon hearing Jesus' words. Clearly his possessions were, at that time at least, more precious to him than God and his fellow men and women. Jesus knew all this in advance. But since the young man was serious in seeking perfection (and God wants all of us to do just that), Jesus showed him that there was still work to be done within his own heart and mind before he could reach the goal at which he was aiming.

Brothers and sisters, this instruction is important to every one who lives upon this earth. Let us pray for the rich and the poor. Let us pray for ourselves that we may not enter into the temptation of either scorning earthly goods - and thereby not being good stewards of them, or treasuring these goods above all else - including God and our brothers and sisters.
