Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost: Acting in Love!

У сьогоднішній Євангелії (I Коринтян 16:13-24) наш Учитель, Апостол Павло наставляє нас усе чинити з любов’ю. Чи не прекрасна настанова? Та ми може запитали б чи сам Павло діє з любов’ю, коли ми чуємо його слова в цьому ж читанню: «Коли хто не любить Господа, нехай буде проклятий!» Чи ж не казав Ісусу, що ми повинні благословляти тих, які нас проклинають? Як же це він діє в любові?

Та як не дивно ми знаходимо цінну вказівку на те, як діяти в любові з цього ж таки вислову Павла. Павло ж говорить від серця. Він не бавиться чемними люб'язними словами. Він СЕРДИТИЙ! Та чому ж він такий сердитий? А тому що він дійсно любить Ісуса – любить Його всім серцем та душею!

Можливо легше нам було б зрозуміти коли б ми ось так подивилися на справу: уявіть собі, що у вас – друг, про якого ви переконались, що він найкраща, наймудріша, найчудовіша сяюча людина в цілому світі. А тоді уявіть собі, що хтось наговорює на цю людину, говорить брехні проти неї, чи просто говорить паскудні речі про вашого друга. Так, я певний, що й ви РОЗЛЮТИЛИСЯ Б! Як і Павло.

Та чому так любив Павло Господа? Пам’ятайте, що Павло був несамовитим гонителем Християн. Був він на шляху до міста Дамаск, щоб і там очолити гоніння, як у Єрусалимі. І раптом його зустріло ясне Світло а з Нього лагідний та рішучий Голос запитав його чому він переслідує Його. Це ж був Сам Господь Ісус, що ототожнював Себе з Християнами, які через Павла були ув’язнені та навіть забиті. Ісус Павла не судив і засуджував. Натомість Він допоміг йому самому собі поставити важливе питання. Коли Павло знайшов відповідь на цей запит він став цілим і оновленим. Він став новою людиною. Це зробила Ісусова любов. Павло відгукнувся в найкращий спосіб. Він щиро полюбив Ісуса.

Ми тут помістили Ікону Христа, що називається «Жених». Вона описує краще чим будь-які слова ту коштовну любов Господа, Який ототожнює Себе зі Своїми страждаючими людьми і приймає їхню смерть у Себе, щоб вона вже більше не мала влади над ними.

Павло вчить нас, що для того, щоб дійсно діяти в любові ми мусимо знайти чудову любов Ісуса. Любов, яка шанує гідність та чесність людини. Любов, яка не примирюється з брехнею чи лицемірством, а завжди спонукує нас ставати найкращими людьми, якими тільки можемо бути – тими чим ми насправді є: пре цінними дітьми Отця Небесного!

Шукаймо цієї любові. Один з найкращих способів – вирішити діяти та говорити, як робив Ісус. О так, у нас будуть багато невдач у цьому намаганню. Не легко нам руйнувати давні навички страху та себелюбства. Але навіть провалюватися в такій благородній справі – це вже ось велике! Це набагато краще чим мати успіх у численних чинах обману, не людяності та пихи, які так наполегливо намагаються опанувати нашу увагу. Це ж велике діло, часами. Постраждати, коли це страждання приносить добро тим, яких ми любимо – і остаточно й нам самим. Якась слава в цьому!

Чому ж би нам не прийняти цей виклик? Це ж зробили деякі з найславніших і найкращих людей, яки коли-небудь знав світ. І то навіть деякі з тих, які не мали цієї прекрасної спонуки, яку маємо ми: як православні Християни ми посвячені вірити в Нього, як Втіленого Бога, Другу Особу Пресвятої Тройці, Предвічного Сина Предвічного Отця. Йдімо за Ним у Рай, якого Він здобув – починаючи вже тут на цьому світі!

In today’s Epistle (I Corinthians 16:13-24) our Teacher, the Apostle Paul, tells us to do everything in love. Good advice, no? But we might want to ask whether Paul himself is acting in love when we read him saying in this same section: "Whoever does not love the Lord - a curse on him!" Did not Jesus say that we should bless those who curse us? How is this acting in love?

Strange as it seems we can find a valuable clue as to how to act in love from this very expression of anger and condemnation on Paul’s part. This is because Paul is speaking from the heart. He is not playing nice, polite games. He is ANGRY! Why is he so angry, though? It is because he really loves Jesus - loves Him with all his heart and soul!

It might be easier for us to understand this if we were to look at it in this way: imagine that you have a friend whom you have found to be the best, the wisest, the kindest, the most wonderful splendid person in the world. And then imagine someone slandering this person, telling lies about him or her, or just saying nasty things in general about your friend. Yes, I think, you would be FURIOUS! Just as Paul was.

Why did Paul love the Lord so much? Remember that Paul had been a violent persecutor of Christians. He was en route to the city of Damascus to lead the persecution there just as he had done in Jerusalem. Suddenly he was confronted with a bright Light and in the midst of it a gentle firm Voice asked him why he was persecuting Him. Іt was the Lord Jesus, identifying Himself with the Christians Paul had had imprisoned and even killed. Jesus did not judge or condemn Paul. Instead He helped him to ask himself a very important question. When Paul found the answer he was healed and restored. He became a new person. The love of Jesus had done it. Paul responded in the very best way possible. He loved the Lord back.

We have reproduced here the Icon of Christ called “The Bridegroom” which illustrates better than any verbal expressions the costly love of the Lord Who identifies with His suffering people and accepts their death into Himself so that it would no longer have power over them.

Paul teaches us that to really be acting in love we need to find this wonderful love of Jesus. A love which respects people’s dignity and integrity. A love which does not make peace with lies or hypocrisy, but always persuades us to become the very best people we can be - who we really are: the precious children of the Heavenly Father!

Let’s look for this love. One of the best ways is to decide to act and speak as Jesus did. Oh, yes, we will fail in this endeavour over and over. It is not easy to break old habits of fear and selfishness. But even to fail in such a noble undertaking is something great! It is much better than succeeding at the many undertakings of deception, cruelty and arrogance that present themselves so insistently to our attention. It is a great thing to suffer sometimes, if that suffering benefits those we love, and ultimately, our own selves. There is a glory about it!

Why not take up the challenge? Some of the greatest and best people the world has ever known have. Even some who did not have the excellent reason we have: as Orthodox Christians we are committed to believing that He is God Incarnate, the Second Person of the Trinity, the Eternal Son of the Eternal Father. Let’s follow Him to the Paradise He has won - beginning here upon the earth!
