«Скільки я буду жити, стільки буду молитися за тих наших дітей, що полягли, і котрі вціліли, і за тих, які страждають на засланні. Я за всіх них молюся.»
1-го січня на григоріанському календарі (відповідає 19-му грудня за юліанським) – день упокоєння в р. 1971 Преподобного Амфілохія Почаївського, якого канонізувала Українська Православна Церква (Московського Патріархату) у травні 2002.
Амфілохій народився Яковом Голова тюком 27 листопада/10 грудня 1894 р. у селі Мала Яловиця в теперішній Тернопільській області в Україні. Тоді це була частина Австро-Угорської Імперії. Його батьки – Варнава та Анна. Він один з 10-ох дітей. Батько Святого мав здібність складати поломані кості і юнак не раз допомагав йому.
Служіння Якова на полі бою в першій світовій війні наклонили його намагатися збільшувати добро в світі служінням Господові. Він став послушником у славній Свято-Успенській Почаївській Лаврі. 8-го липня 1932 прийняв постриг чернечий з ім’ям Йосип, з благословення Митрополита Діонісія Варшавського і всієї Польщі (це ж той Ієрарх, що в часі другої світової війни, поблагословив відновлення Української Автокефальної Православної Церкви в Україні).
27-го вересня 1936 його висвятили на ієромонаха. Його початкова праця з батьком і пізніше як медик під час війни наклонили о. Йосипа чинити що тільки міг, щоб допомагати недужим. Його знання та досвід у цьому було незмірно підсилене його життям у Молитві, постах та посвяті Господові. До нього стали так багато приходити о поміч, що треба було поселитися в хатці на цвинтарі біля Лаври, щоб не перешкоджати щоденному житті інших ченців.
О. Йосип служив там 20 літ, включно з бурхливими роками другої світової війни. Ті учасники цієї Армії, як боролася і проти німецьких і сов’єтьських займанців, що залишилися між живими із вдячністю згадують його теплоту та ласкавість, як і його підтримку суверенної України. Його слова до них подані на початку цієї статейки.
Безбожний сов’єтьський режим, що захопив владу по війні дуже стурбований був невпинним струмком людей, що шукали і здобували уздоровлення від побожного ченця. Їхні зусилля зупинити це не вдавалися. На останку намагалися закрити Лавру. О. Йосип перешкодив цьому відважно вирвавши ключі до Свято-Троїцького Собору з рук коменданта і покликавши довколишніх людей допомогти прогнати захватчиків. Вони мусіли втекти але за це о. Йосипа незабаром забрав ганебної слави «чорний ворон» до психіатричної лікарні, де його накололи шкідливими медикаментами.
Ці страждання припинилися за посередництвом дочки Сталіна Світлани Алілуєвої, яку Святий колись був вилікував з душевної недуги. Не маючи можливість повернутися до Лаври, о. Йосип поселився в рідному селі. Струмок потребуючих його помочі продовжувався, чим далі турбувалася сов’єтьська влада. У 1965 їй вдалося настроїти члена родини Святого завезти його в ліс, там його сильно побити та вкинути в болото. Шукачі знайшли його після того, як він там лежав був 8 годин. Привезли його до Лаври, а братія, впевнена в тому, що він скоро покидатиме світ, увела його в схему надавши йому ім’я Амфілохій.
Та о. Амфілохій видужав і переселився в дім його племінниці Анни і там продовжував своє служіння аж до його упокоєння 1-го січня 1971 р. Він наперед знав про грядучу свою смерть, кажучи що на його домовину кидатимуть мерзлу землю. Сідаючи до останньої вечері він сказав зібраним: «Ви всі дорогі мені та між вами є і Юда». Уважають, що його смерть спричинило отруєння, яку виконала одна особа з-поміж його помічників.
Св. Амфілохій продовжує лікувати недужих своїми Молитвами. У процесі його канонізації, його тіло занесли до Почаївської Лаври, де його рахують одним зі Лаврських скарбів. Нехай же його молитви приносять уздоровлення усім страждаючим а також його улюбленій Україні, яка намагається далі ступати вперед по шаляху демократії та справедливого і законослухняного суспільства. January 1 on the Gregorian calendar (which is December 19 according to the Julian calendar) marks the day of repose in 1971 of St. Amphilochius of Pochayiv, who was canonized by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) in May of 2002.
Amphilochius was born Yakiv Holovatyuk on November 27/December 10, 1894, in the village of Mala Ilovytsia in what is now the Ternopil oblast’ of Ukraine. At that time it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His parents were Varnava and Anna and he was one of 10 children. His father had a talent for setting broken bones and the lad would sometimes help him.
His experiences in the field in the first world war inclined Yakiv to seek to increase goodness in the world by serving the Lord. He became a novice in the renowned Holy Dormition Lavra in Pochayiv. On July 8, 1932, he was tonsured a monk with the name of Joseph, upon the blessing of Metropolitan Dionisiy of Warsaw and all Poland (the same hierarch who, during the second world war, blessed the formation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Autocephalous Church in Ukraine).
On September 27, 1936, he was ordained a hieromonk. His initial work with his father, and later as a medic during the war, inclined Fr. Joseph to do all he could to help the sick. His knowledge and experience was immensely supplemented by his life of prayer, fasting and dedication to the Lord. So many sick people began to come to see him for help, that he was blessed to live in a little house on the cemetery outside the Lavra so as not to disturb the routine of the other monks.
Fr. Joseph ministered there for 20 years, including the turbulent years of the second world war. During this time he also helped the partisans of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army as we may read in this Ukrainian article: http://www.old.risu.org.ua/ukr/wap/article;32989/. Some survivors of this Army which fought both the German and the Soviet occupiers fondly recall his warmth and kindness as well as his support for an independent Ukraine. His words to them are cited at the top of this article.
The atheistic Soviet regime which seized power after the war was much disturbed by the constant stream of people seeking and receiving healing from the pious monk. Their efforts to stop this were unsuccessful. Finally they sought to close the Lavra. Fr. Joseph intervened by snatching the keys to the Holy Trinity Cathedral from the commander and calling upon the people nearby to help. The intruders were forced to flee, but Fr. Joseph was soon taken away by the infamous black car and incarcerated in a psychiatric hospital where he was injected with harmful drugs.
These sufferings came to an end with the intervention of Stalin’s daughter, Svetlana Alliluyeva, whom he had once healed of an emotional illness. Unable to return to the Lavra, Fr. Joseph took up residence in his native village. The stream of those seeking his help resumed to the consternation of the Soviet authorities. In 1965 they were able to induce a member of the Saint’s family to take him to the forest, beat him and throw him into the swamp. Searchers found him after he had lain there for eight hours and brought him to the Lavra. The brethren, convinced that he was about to depart this world, conferred the schema upon him with the name of Amphilokhiy (Amphilochius).
Fr. Amphilochius recovered, however, and moved into the home of his niece, Anna, where he continued his ministry until his death on January 1, 1971. He knew of his impending death before it came saying that the ground thrown upon his grave would be frozen. As he sat down to his last meal he said to those assembled: “You are all dear to me but there is a Judas among you.” It is held that his death was due to poison administered by one of his helpers..
St. Amphilochius continues to heal the sick with his prayers. As part of the canonization process, his body was brought into the Pochayiv Lavra, where it is one of the Lavra’s treasures. May his prayers bring healing to all who suffer, as well as to his beloved land of Ukraine, which struggles to move along the path of democracy and a just and law-abiding society. Amen. |
