На 6-го травня за григоріанським календарем (це 23-го квітня за юліанським) ми поминаємо, крім дуже відомого Великомученика Юрія, іншого набагато менш відомого. Це – Новомученик Лазар, Пастух Болгарський, що дав своє життя за Господа у р. 1802.
Лазаря назвали в честь Св. Лазаря Чотиридневного, якого Господь воскресив з мертвих (а це ім’я еллінізована версія поважного імені «Єлеазар», що означає «Бог допоміг»). Цей Лазар має велику повагу в Болгарській культурі, будуче пов'язаний з приходом весни. Групи болгарськиї дівчат, яких звуть «лазарками», відвідують доми у Лазареву Суботу, співають і передають їм благословення.
Новомученик Лазар народився в селі Дебел Дял біля міста Габрово в Болгарії. Родина його там живе до нині. (Багато чого про нього можна знайти на болгарській мові на цьому сайті: Pravoslavieto.com).
Знайшов він працю як пастух біля міста Сома в західній Туреччині. Болгарія в той час була в Османській імперії. Одного дня проходила турецька жінка біля місця, де Лазар відпочивав і його пси пильнували овець. Гавкіт собак розбудив його і він прибіг, щоб захистити жінку від шкоди зі сторони собак, які надто пильно захищали стадо.
Жінка повернулася до додому з трошки порваною одежею. Вона пояснила це мужеві сказавши, що це Лазар був накинувся на неї. Розлючений муж тоді побіг вбивати чоловіка, що, як він думав, був образив честь його дружини. Тому що він його не знав, він вистрілив у друга Лазаря і важко поранив його але не на смерть. Коли він довідався про свою помилку то побоявся, що його можуть судити за напад на невинну людину. Він підбурив членів родини своєї жінки, щоб оскаржили Лазаря, якого внаслідок цього заарештували і ув’язнили в підготовці до суду.
Урядовий чиновник, якому довірено справу вирішив розв’язати її здобуттям навернення Лазаря на Іслам. Він дозволив застосувати силу в разі би Лазар відмовлявся. Лазар помолився до Св. Юрія, щоб надав йому сили бо ж було це навечір’я його Свята. Він переніс тортури відважно й терпеливо і його залишили, як думали, мертвим. Та ага (турецький чиновник) знайшов його живим на наступний день (День Св. Юрія) і подумав, що тут мабуть діє сила Божа. Він запропонував юнакові (Лазарю було 28 літ) дарунки та почесті, наколи б він тільки навернувся на Іслам.
Та Лазар твердо відповів: «Я поклоняюся і служу Богу Єдиному в Трьох Особах. Так як я хрестився в Його Імені і став Християном, так у Його Імені я готовий і вирішив помирати, і ніщо в світі не може змінити моє рішення!” Отож йому дали вирок на повішення. Як знак своєї рішучості Лазар сам наложив петлю навколо своєї шиї. Наслідуючи нашого Господа він і помолився за своїх мучителів. Багато чуд відбулося навколо його Мощів. Ікона на зріст Новомученика Лазаря Пастуха знаходиться в Рильському Монастирі в Болгарії.
Слово «мученик» на мові грецькій («мартірас») означає «той, хто свідчить». Лазар дав вірне свідоцтво про хоробрість та співчутливість Христа, які наповнюють тих, що поєднані з Ним. Ця співчутливість відкриває двері покаяння, примирення і перетворення тому, хто завдає болі. Це різко відмінне від того для чого часто вживається (чи радше зло вживається) це слово, коли спогад про «мучеників» використовують, щоб розпалювати помсту, конфлікти та насильство.
Нехай Св. Лазар, разом з безліч іншими мучениками, своїм прикладом та молитвами, приведе до покаяння усіх, що піддаються пристрастям ненависті та владолюбства, і так сприяє пришестям золотого та вічного віку Месії, віку справжнього миру та злагоди, про який він переконливо свідчить такою дорогою особистою ціною. Амінь.

“I worship and serve One God in Three Persons. Just as I was baptized in His Name and became a Christian, so in His Name I am prepared and have decided to die and nothing in this world can change my mind!”
On May 6 according to the Gregorian Calendar (which is April 23 on the Julian) we commemorate, beside the greatly renowned Great Martyr George, another much less familiar one. It is the New Martyr Lazarus the Shepherd, of Bulgaria who gave his life for the Lord in the year 1802.
Lazarus was named after St. Lazarus of the Four Days, whom the Lord raised from the dead (and this name is a Hellenized version of the venerable name “Eleazar” which means “God has helped”). This Lazarus is much honoured in Bulgarian culture being linked with the coming of spring. Groups of Bulgarian girls called “lazarky” visit homes on Lazarus’ Saturday singing songs and wishing blessings upon them.
New Martyr Lazarus was born in the village of Debel Dyal near the city of Gabrovo in Bulgaria. Members of his family live there till this day. (A great deal about him is to be found in Bulgarian on this site: Pravoslavieto.com).
He found work as a shepherd near the town of Soma in the western part of Turkey. Bulgaria was part of the Ottoman Empire at the time. One day a Turkish lady was passing by the place where Lazarus was resting while his dogs guarded the sheep. The dogs’ barking woke him and he rushed to ensure that the lady would not be hurt by the dogs in their zeal to protect their flock.
The lady went home with a small tear in her clothing. She explained this to her husband by saying that it was Lazarus who had attacked her. The enraged man rushed off to kill the imagined offender of his wife’s honour. Not knowing him, he fired at Lazarus’ companion, badly wounding but not killing him. Upon learning of his error the man became afraid that he might face charges for his attack on an innocent man. He stirred up members of his wife’s family to accuse Lazarus who was arrested and jailed in preparation for a trial.
The government official in charge of the matter decided to resolve it by obtaining the conversion of Lazarus to Islam. He authorized the use of force in case Lazarus refused. Lazarus prayed to St. George for strength as it was the eve of his Feastday. He patiently and bravely endured horrible tortures and was left for dead. However the Agha (Turkish official) found him still alive the next day (St. George’s Day) and thought that the power of God might be at work. He offered the young man (Lazarus was 28) gifts and honours if he would only convert.
But Lazarus firmly replied: “I worship and serve One God in Three Persons. Just as I was baptized in His Name and became a Christian, so in His Name I am prepared and have decided to die and nothing in this world can change my mind!” He was then sentenced to hang. As a sign of his resolve Lazarus placed the noose around his neck himself. Imitating our Lord he prayed for his tormentors. Many miracles occurred from his Relics. A life size Icon of the New Martyr, Lazarus the Shepherd, is to be found in the Rylsky Monastery in Bulgaria.
The word “martyr” comes from the Greek and means “one who bears testimony”. Lazarus bore faithful testimony to the courage and compassion of Christ which fills those who are united with Him – a compassion which opens the door to repentance, reconciliation and transformation for the ones inflicting the hurt. This is dramatically different from the way the word is often used – or rather abused - in which the memory of “martyrs” is invoked to fuel vengeance, conflict and violence.
May St. Lazarus, along with countless other martyrs, by his example and prayers, bring to repentance all who give way to the passions of hatred and lust for power, and so help to bring about the golden and eternal Messianic age of true peace and harmony to which he bears costly and persuasive testimony.
