«Хресту Твоєму поклоняємось, Владико, і святе Воскресення Твоє славимо»
На початку 20-го століття деякі мислителі висловлювали впевненість про те, що наступає новий золотий вік, в якому останні проблеми світу будуть вирішені в наслідок поступу в освіті та технології. Вони надіялись, що тьма вже ось назавжди зникає і від тепер засяє світло для всіх.
Всім ясно, що так не сталося. У тому ж столітті відбулися дві світові війни, які своїм осягом перевищили всі попередні. А скільки ж менших війн відбулося – і далі відбуваються! Які страшні катастфрофи відбулися – природні та людиною створені. Цілі народи постраждали від геноцидів: вірменський, український, єврейський, камбоджський, руанданський. І зброя, яка могла б знищити всю планету далі стоїть на поготові. Чи не розчарувалися всі, що очікували золотого віку в історії людства?
Ці народи – і всі ми могли б запитати: як могли люди так жорстоко ставитися один до одного? І чому добрий і всемогутній Бог дозволив на ці звірства?
Задовольняючої відповіді не легко знайти. Рани такі ж глибокі! Та як християни, ми таки мусимо шукати відповідей і значіння в тому, що стається в світі. Мусимо ми шукати чогось, що допоможе зрозуміти дану подію у світлі нашої віри в те, що Бог добрий та все приводить до остаточного добра.
Третя Неділя Посту як раз дає нам те, що може допомогти в цьому нашому шуканню. А саме, перед нами стає Хрест Господній. Хрест багато дечого нам розкриває. Перш за все показує він нам справжній стан цього впалого світу. Часто ж буває, що шукають люди досконалого провідника, який міг би попровадити людство в вирішенню всіх його проблем. Господь Ісусу Христос якраз і є та досконала Людина – Провідник, Якому ніхто не міг закинути будь яку провину. Він – рішучий і сильний, прямий і милосердний. Та світ не дав Йому володіти, щоб міг вивести людей з віковічної недолі. Навпаки Його ж засудили на смерть – і то жорстоку й болючу – на Хресті. Світ, який так віднісся до досконалого Богочоловіка Ісусуа Христа – це світ, в якому народовбивства та всякі страхіття - на порядку денному. Їх можна очікувати коли-небудь.
Та Хрест се ж таки дає нам і надію. Ця надія – певна, тому що не вона полягає на цьому впалому, мінливому світі. Ця надія основана на перемозі, яку Христос здобув, коли Він добровільно прийняв хресні муки. Ці муки для Нього були такі великі, що ми й не можемо їх собі уявити. Найбільше терпіння в тому, що це досконала, чиста Людина, яка є рівночасно Бог, приймає в Себе всі страшні та огидні гріхи світу. Який же жах для Нього! Яке невимовне терпіння!
Та через Нього всі ми грішні маємо можливість від того часу перейти в Царство, в якому завершується досконалість і наступає вічний справді золотий вік. І жертви гріхів цього світу знаходять у Ньому Сострадальця. Він же Жертва, яка Своїм стражданням перемогла ворога – смерть. Його жертва дає нам надію невмирущу.
Поручаймо ж Йому всі жертви та страждання цього світу. Він же їх перетворює на перемогу добра над злом, світла над темрявою, життя над смертю.Амінь

“We bow down before Your Cross, O Master, and we glorify Your Holy Resurrection.”
At the beginning of the 20th century some thinkers proclaimed their certainty that a new golden age was dawning, in which the final problems of the world would be resolved thanks to progress in education and technology. They expected that all darkness was about to be dispelled and that the time of enlightenment would soon come upon everyone.
It is clear to everyone that this did not occur. That century saw two world wars whose devastation eclipsed all previous ones. And how many more wars – albeit smaller – took place and are still taking place! What catastrophes took place – natural and those created by humans! Nations suffered from genocides: the Armenians, the Ukrainians, the Jews, the Cambodians, the Rwandans. And weapons which can destroy all the planet continue to stand ready for use. Is there anyone left who still believes in the dawning of a golden age for humanity?
The stricken nations – all of us - might well ask: how can humans be so cruel to one another? And why did a good and almighty God allow such atrocities to take place?
It is most difficult to find a satisfactory answer. The wounds are so deep! Yet as Christians we must ever seek to find answers and meaning in the things that occur in this world. We must seek a way to understand each event in the light of our faith that God is indeed good and brings everything to ultimate goodness.
The Third Sunday of the Great Fast gives us what we need to help us in our search. It holds before us the Lord’s Cross. The Cross reveals many things to us. First of all it shows us the true nature of this fallen world. People often seek a perfect leader, who would guide humanity in resolving all of its problems. The Lord Jesus Christ is in fact this perfect Man, a Leader Whom no one could accuse of any wrongdoing. He is decisive and powerful, forthright and merciful. Yet the world would not let Him rule and lead the people out of their ages-long misery. On the contrary, it condemned Him to death, a most cruel and painful death – upon the Cross. A world which responded to the perfect Man and perfect God, Jesus Christ, in this fashion is clearly a world where genocides and horrors are a not at all unusual. They may be expected to occur at any time.
But the Cross gives us hope. And it is a sure hope which does not depend upon this fallen fickle world. This hope is based upon the victory won by Christ when He voluntarily accepted the pains of the Cross. We cannot even begin to fathom in the slightest what suffering this brought Him. The greatest suffering lies in the fact that this perfect and pure Human, who is also God, accepts into Himself all the terrible and abominable sins of the world. What horror this must be for Him! What unspeakable suffering!
Yet through them, all we sinners can, from that time on, pass over into the Kingdom where perfection is attained and the true golden age arrives. And the victims of the sins of this world find in Him a fellow Sufferer. He is the Victim, Who by His suffering overcame the enemy – death. His sacrifice gives us undying hope.
Let us commend all the victims and suffering of this world to Him. He transforms them into the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, life over death. Amen. |
