«Хто вірує в Мене, як каже Писання, то ріки живої води потечуть із утроби його…» (Господь Ісус – Івана 7:37)

Хто тільки прожив на цьому світі певний час із певною свідомістю вже завважив, що справи тут – складні. Посеред надзвичайної краси знаходиться стільки труднощів, клопотів та журби. Краса світу немов би запевняє, що можна на цій планеті знайти справжнє щастя – але на ділі завжди чогось не вистачає. А коли людина намагається ловити те щастя, якось ніколи це не вдається. Ох, якби тільки ми могли його знайти і якби тільки воно зосталося в нас. Але чи таке можливе? Чи можливо це просто спокуса – ілюзія?

Сьогоднішнє Свято – День П’ятидесятниці, Зшестя Святого Духа приносить нам Євангелію (Івана 7:37-52,8:12), в якому чуємо про щастя, яке триває і яке прносить щастя і другим. Господь каже: «Коли прагне хто з вас нехай прийде до Мене та й п'є!» Люди не тільки води прагнуть. Господь Ісус пропонує те, що заспокоює духовну спрагу, спрагу на тривале щастя, спрагу на відповіді на наші важкі запитання – спрагу на смисл життя.

Спрага іноді може бути приємною! Тоді, коли людина знає, що її спрагу скоро зніме гарний холодний напиток – і коли вона таким напитком втішається, то вона щаслива в тому, що мала таку спрагу і хотіла б знову відчути її. Це тоді, коли вона переживає в тому, що ця спрага ніколи не відійде, та що вона помре буз напитку, що спрага буває страшною і жахливою.

Господь Ісус каже: «Хто вірує в Мене, як каже Писання, то ріки живої води потечуть із утроби його». Справа не в тому, що учні Христові ніколи не будуть прагнути, а в тому, що ми знаймо вірою і повторним досвідом, що наша спрага – для того, щоб знайти заспокоєння її. Та не тільки це, але ми також можемо бути середниками для заспокоєння спраги інших також. Цей досвід може бути таким значним, що буде немов би то ріки води через нас пливе – жива, ясна, чиста, прозора, холодна вода. Така, яку людина хоче пити, така в якій вона б і купалася, щоб вийти оновленою та очищеною.

Ця обітниця Господня також подає нам передумови на одержання такого щастя. Перше, ми мусимо прагнути і усвідомлювати свою спрагу. А тоді ми мусимо усвідомлювати про те, чого саме ми прагнемо. Святий Дух, що Його Господь Ісус послав у сіті від Отця по Своїй смерті, воскресінню та вознесінню неспинно діє, щоб привести людям таке щастя. Це Він пробуджує в нас спрагу на справжнє щастя, на таке, яке тільки заспокоюється тим, що людина живе в єдності з Богом та Його створінням. Святий Дух подає нам свідомість того наскільки ми прагнемо саме такого життя.

Є ще одна передумова: ми мусимо погоджуватися з тим, що маємо ми ділитися таким щастям. Жива Вода, Яка заспокоює всю нашу спрагу не пливе в себелюбному, холодному серці, що не прощає і завжди підозріває. Якщо ми завжди турбуємось тільки за свою бажання та потреби ми ніколи не завважимо того, як Бог щедро дає нам те, що нам дійсно потрібно і нас навертає до тривалого, справжнього щастя – духовного щастя єднання з Ним вірою та милосердям і ласкавістю до інших.

Чи не помолились би ось так: О Господи, дає мені відчути свою спрагу. Подай мені радість напитися Живої Води, Твого Святого Духа, і ділитися цією Живою Водою з іншими. Амінь.

“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink” (The Lord Jesus - John 7:37)

Anyone who has lived upon this earth for some time with some awareness has already realized that things here are not easy. In the midst of so much beauty there is so much trouble, hardship and worry. The world's beauty seems to promise that one can be truly happy on this planet - but there always seems to be something lacking. And if one goes pursuing that happiness it seems always to elude one. If only we could find it and if only it would stay with us! But is such a thing possible? Or is it just a temptation – an illusion?

Today's Feast - the Day of Pentecost, the Descent of the Holy Spirit brings us a Gospel reading (John 7:37-52,8:12) with images which speak of a happiness that lasts and that makes other people happy, too. Jesus says: "If any one thirsts, let him come to Me and drink". It is not only water for which people thirst. Jesus offers that which responds to a spiritual thirst, a thirst for lasting happiness, a thirst for answers to our hard questions - a thirst for meaning.

There is a time when it is pleasant to be thirsty! When you know that your thirst will soon be satisfied with a nice cool drink - and when you are enjoying that drink, you are happy that you were thirsty and you look forward to being thirsty like that again! It is when you fear that your thirst will never be satisfied - that you will die without a drink - that thirst is a fearful and horrible thing.

Jesus says: “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water”. It is not that followers of Christ never know thirst - but that we know by faith and experience which has been proven over and over again, that our thirst will be satisfied. Not only that, but we can become channels for satisfying the thirst of others as well. So rich can this experience be that it would be as though rivers of water were flowing through us - living, bright, clear, pure, cool water, the kind you want to drink, the kind you want to swim in to be refreshed and clean.

This promise of the Lord's also shows us the preconditions for receiving this kind of happiness. First we must be thirsty and be aware of our thirst. Then we must discover what it is for which we thirst. The Holy Spirit whom Jesus sent into the world from the Father after His death, resurrection and ascension is continually working to bring about this awareness. It is He who awakens in us a thirst for real happiness, the kind that is satisfied only by living in communion with God and His creation. The Holy Spirit helps us realize how thirsty we really are for that kind of life.

There is another requirement as well: we must become willing to share this happiness. The living Water which satisfies all our thirst does not flow in a selfish, cold, unforgiving, suspicious heart. If we are always worried only about ourselves and our needs, we will not notice how God continually meets our needs and points us towards lasting and true happiness - the spiritual happiness of being connected to Him by faith, mercy and kindness to others.

We might pray thus: Oh Lord, help me realize how thirsty I really am. Grant me the joy of drinking the living Water, Your Holy Spirit and of sharing this living Water with others. Amen.
