«Не жадай… ані всього, що ближнього твого» (Книга Вихід 20:17)

На 1-го лютого за григоріанським календарем (відповідає 19-го січня за юліанським календарем) ми святкуємо між іншими і пам'ять смиренного слуги Божого Преподобного Макарія Диякона, що подвизався в Дальніх печерах Києво-Печерської Лаври в століттях 13-му і 14-му. Жив він, як ми з Вами в двох століттях.

Про нього знаємо дуже мало. Одна з причин та – що людської слави він не шукав, а Божої. А цю славу здобувають саме смиренністю та покірливістю. Та здобувши її слава його на всі віки – у Церкві, у Царстві Небесному і може він і нам допомагати своїм заступництвом у наших зусиллях жити, як громадяни Царства цього у царстві цього світу.

Пам'ять Преподобного Диякона Макарія святкуємо у цей день, тому що тоді споминається його небесний покровитель Преподобний о. Макарій Великий Єгипетський. Тобто не знаємо також дня коли він упокоївся, бо інакше в той день поминали б його. Саме собою, що не знаємо коли й де народився ані імен ані прізвищ його батьків.

Та відомо те, що Преподобний Диякон Макарій (якого ім’я означає «благословенний») визначався відсутністю будьякої пожадливості. Тобто у ньому бачимо до досконалої міри виповнення 10-ої заповіді, яка каже: «Не жадай дому ближнього свого, не жадай жони ближнього свого, ані раба його, ані невільниці його, ані вола його, ані осла його, ані всього, що ближнього твого!» (Книга Вихід 20:17).

Що за важлива чеснота! Особливо це видно нам у ці часи, коли економіка світу так захитана, коли мудрі світу цього виявили свою неспроможність тримати баланс у суспільстві. Людська пожадливість затьмарила свідомість того, що щастя кожного мешканця планету земля зв’язана невідлучно від щастя всіх інших.

Св. Макарій показує нам спосіб життя, в якому можна мати спокій і добро не жадаючи нічого, що ближнього – а навпаки радіючи щастям ближнього і підтримуючи його.

У ньому також проявлялася велика ревність до Храму Божого та в читанні Св. Писання. Його навчила братія писати й читати після цього коли його батьки віддали його в монастир, як вияв вдячності за те, що він видужав бо дуже хворів, як дитина. Він був дуже лагідний і смиренний і легко здобув любов і приязнь братії. А як визнання його побожності висвятили його в сан Диякона. Відомо, що православних монахів переважно не висвячують на священнослужителі. Це роблять тільки по потребі, щоб були служителі на відправах і висвячують тільки найгідніших, між якими очевидно був і Макарій.

Преподобний Макарій також визначався постом. Без посту, тобто стриманості, повздержливости та зусиль над опануванням свої тілесних бажань не було б і відсутності пожадливості. У цей час коли вже наші очі звертаються на грядучий час Св. Великого Посту дуже корисно нам прийняти за зразок Св. Макарія Диякона Києво-Печерського та жадати його молитов, щоб і ми могли поступати в цих же чеснотах, яких проявляв він у своєму трудолюбивому житті.

“You shall not covet… anything that is your neighbor’s.” (Exodus 20:17)

Among the Saints whose memory we celebrate on February 1 according to the Gregorian calendar (which isJanuary 19 on the Julian calendar) is the servant of God, Macarius the Deacon, who pursued his ascetic endeavours in the Far Caves of the Kyivan Cave Monastery in the 13th and 14th centuries. He lived, as do we, in two centuries.

We know very little about him. One reason for that is that he did not seek earthly glory. He sought the glory that comes from God – a glory that is attained by humility and submissiveness. Yet having attained it his glory is for all ages – in the Church, the Kingdom of Heaven, and he can also aid us by his intercession as we seek to live as citizens of this Kingdom in the kingdom of this world.

We commemorate the Venerable Deacon Macarius today because it is also the day that we celebrate his heavenly patron, the Venerable Father Macarius the Great of Egypt. That means that we do not know the day of his repose, for otherwise we would commemorate him on that day. Similarly we do not know where he was born, nor the names and surnames of his parents.

What is known is that the Venerable Deacon Macarius (whose name means “blessed”) was distinguished by the absence in him of any covetousness. That is we see in him perfection in fulfilling the Tenth Commandment which says: “You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbour’s”(Exodus 20:17).

What an important virtue this is! It may especially be seen as such in our times when the world’s economy is so shaken, when the wise of this world have shown their inability to keep a balance in society. Human covetousness has obscured our awareness of the fact that the happiness of every person living on earth is inseparably linked with that of every other person.

St. Macarius shows a way of living in which one may have peace and goodness without coveting that which belongs to another, but rather rejoicing that this person has such a good thing and helping them maintain it.

St. Macarius also showed great zeal for God’s Temple and for the reading of Holy Scriptures. His brother monks taught him to read and write after his parents brought him to the monastery in gratitude for his health, for he had been very sickly as a child. He was very mild and humble and easily won the love and friendship of the brethren. He was ordained a Deacon in recognition of his piety. It is well known that Orthodox monks are usually not ordained to holy orders. This is done only when necessary in order to have celebrants of the holy offices in the monastery and then only the most worthy are so ordained. Clearly Macarius was such a man.

The Venerable Macarius also distinguished himself in fasting. Of course covetousness could not have been eliminated in him without this endeavour, that is without abstinence and moderation and the labour of gaining control over his bodily desires. In these days, when our eyes are turning towards the approaching spiritual season of the Great Fast, it is very useful for us to take an example from St. Macarius the Deacon of the Kyivan Caves and desire his prayers so that we too might progress in the virtues which he manifested in his life, so distinguished by his love of work for the Lord.
